Position Oppose
Comments Hello, my name is Ariel Barbey. I am a Camarillo resident, and I was born and raised here in Camarillo. I respectfully oppose the CFROG resolution.
I believe this is a politicized effort that wastes limited City Council time and resources. The Policy Committee and City Council should be focused on issues that directly impact the residents of Camarillo. There are many pressing local matters facing our city that deserve attention, and I would rather see our elected officials spending their time making decisions on things that actually matter to our community instead of passing symbolic resolutions about broader statewide energy policy.
I also believe it is important to recognize that Ventura County operates under some of the strictest environmental regulations of any oil and gas producing region in the world. Local energy producers are heavily regulated and monitored by numerous 1 local, state, and federal agencies, including the California Geologic Energy Management Division, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Continuous reporting requirements, permitting
standards, inspections, and environmental oversight are already extensive. The narrative that local production is somehow unregulated or reckless is simply inaccurate.
Additionally, locally produced oil and gas is among the cleanest and most regulated in the world. California’s production standards are significantly stricter than those in countries like Venezuela, Nigeria, and parts of the Middle East, which are the alternative sources when local production is reduced. Choosing to rely more heavily on foreign oil instead of responsibly produced California energy is not a climate victory — it can actually result in a greater overall environmental impact due to weaker environmental standards and increased transportation emissions.
I respectfully ask the City Council to focus on practical local governance and issues that directly improve the lives of Camarillo residents.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
