Dear Camarillo City Councilmembers,
My name is Jack Masci and I am a Camarillo resident, Moorpark College graduate, and a transfer mechanical engineering student at San Diego State University. I am writing to urge the Camarillo City Council to vote in support of passing this resolution, Agenda Item R, to phase out fossil fuels, defend safety setbacks, hold polluters accountable, and demonstrate the city’s commitment to uplifting youth voices.
I care about reducing fossil fuels, conserving our environment, and preventing wildfires. These are the things the CFROG youth climate resolution advocates for. The science supports that we need to reduce our use of fossil fuels and transition to clean energy, something that I believe in as an engineer. I have traveled around the world to places like Ecuador and Chile, and I have seen the impacts of the climate crisis on communities worldwide. Here in Camarillo, we have the power to help both local and global communities in standing up to the polluting fossil fuel industry by passing this resolution. Lastly, I care about addressing wildfires that are worsened by climate change. As a Camarillo high school student, I remember having school days canceled due to fires and ash raining down at Adolfo Camarillo High School. Just a year and a half ago, I remember preparing to evacuate our home from the Mountain fire and I know friends who lost everything in these wildfires fueled by climate change.
The Camarillo City Council should pass the youth climate resolution to show its support for a better future that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels. It should also support the health and safety setbacks law that needs defending from polluters trying to reverse it. No one should have to live so close to oil and gas wells that pollute not only the environment but their bodies. And lastly, the City Council should uplift youth voices and show its commitment to my generation. Please approve Agenda Item R, the CFROG youth climate resolution.
Thank you,
Jack Masci
