My name is Sofia Carrasco and I'm an 11th grader from San Diego. Through my campaign work, I've dedicated the past 2 years of my life to three causes: a phaseout of fossil fuels, defense of the SB 1137 health and safety setbacks, and support for Polluters Pay Climate Superfund legislation. I am writing in support of Agenda Item R because it would provide Ventura the opportunity to enshrine these into local laws.

I have led a youth team which passed over 15 resolutions in support. It is necessary that we retain a livable future and pass laws in our local jurisdiction to safeguard the environment. AB 3233, a CA law from 2024, provides cities a unique position to phase away from oil and gas on their own terms.

A local phaseout would not impact the global market which dictates prices. Instead, it would ensure public health, prevent property depreciation, and allow the clean energy sector to expand and provide more sustainable jobs.

I express my solidarity with the students in Camarillo. Thank you.
