Comments To the Camarillo City Council,
A recent POLITICO analysis found that federal judges have ruled against ICE detention practices in roughly 90% of challenged cases, with courts determining that thousands of detentions violated basic due process protections. Judges across the country, including many appointed by Republican presidents and even President Trump himself, have repeatedly concluded that people were being detained without meaningful
opportunities to challenge their confinement in court.
If people are being detained en masse without due process, without timely hearings, and without constitutional protections, then we as a society need to ask difficult moral questions about what that actually represents. History has taught us that detention without due process is not something democratic societies should normalize or look away from.
1 Considering Camarillo hosts an ICE detention facility, I would have expected far more public discussion, oversight, and questioning from our local leadership about what is happening here in our own town. Instead, there has largely been silence.
Just last week, on 05/20/2026, there was yet another
ambulance reported at 321 Cortez Circle in Camarillo. Over the past year, our community has repeatedly witnessed emergency medical responses connected to this facility. Yet there has been little transparency provided to the public about conditions inside.
Recently, Senator Andy Kim spoke after visiting the Delaney Hall detention facility in New Jersey and stated: “What I saw and heard is absolutely unacceptable.” Reports from attorneys and advocates described overcrowding, lack of medical care, and unsafe treatment, with officials saying conditions had “only gotten worse.”
With documented accounts of ambulances arriving at 321
Cortez Circle over the last year, what makes this council believe our town is immune from the same conditions being reported across this country?
As elected officials, you have a responsibility to ask questions, demand transparency, and ensure that human rights and
constitutional protections are being upheld within your own city limits. Silence is not leadership.
