Comments Members of the Camarillo City Council,
Today, reporting from MS Now and The Marshall Project
revealed that since the Trump administration took office last year, ICE has detained more than 500 babies and toddlers. On any given day, approximately 25 children age three and younger are being held in immigration custody.
The first years of life are among the most critical periods of human development. Every second, more than a million neural connections are formed in a young child's brain, laying the foundation for their physical, emotional, and psychological well- being. Yet we are placing infants and toddlers into detention environments where fear, uncertainty, separation, and trauma are becoming part of those foundational experiences.
The article shares the story of a two-year-old child, Kaleth, who 1 was detained with his mother after his father was taken away in handcuffs. According to his mother, he stopped eating for nearly two weeks, became severely withdrawn, and suffered serious physical and emotional decline while in custody.
Another family seeking refuge from political persecution watched their one-year-old son begin hitting himself in the face after months of detention.
These are not statistics. These are children.
These are the families this administration is harming. These stories are not happening somewhere far away. They are part of a system that operates every day, and Camarillo is not exempt from that reality.
Every City Council meeting that passes without action, without even a public statement condemning the detention and trauma of young children, is a choice to remain silent. Silence in the face of injustice is not neutrality. It is complicity.
As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Glass House operation, I ask this Council to reflect on the fact that Camarillo remains the only city in Ventura County that has taken no meaningful action to support or protect its most vulnerable community members.
Camarillo has chosen silence.
History remembers how communities respond when vulnerable people are targeted and harmed. I urge this Council to find its voice, publicly condemn these actions, and stand with the families in our community who are living in fear.
Thank you.
