Comments Dear City Council Members,
First, I apologize that I haven’t attended city council in a while. It is not due to lack of caring for the city, or the vulnerable community I serve. I had a change in my schedule, and a newborn, that has made it more difficult to attend.
I still have many of the same concerns I’ve expressed over the last year. I worry about the city showing true action to protect our vulnerable communities. I worry about our safety as citizens with Flock cameras and the very obvious safety loopholes that have already happened.
I am especially concerned about the obvious participation between ICE and the jail staff/police at the Ventura County Government Center. On multiple occasions, ICE has known the exact time someone is going to be released. I understand that some of the information is public records, but to know the exact 1 time to be able to walk in to the jail lobby, grab the person, and walk out with them in a matter of moments, is a clear sign that someone is giving them detailed information.
This is not in accordance with SB54. Furthermore, SB54 also states that ICE is not allowed to conduct official enforcement actions inside a county jail, yet they continually arrest people the very moment they walk out of the back waiting area.
We have been asking, continually, for our local law enforcement to be retrained and held accountable for their cooperation with ICE. We have asked for town halls for us to have a discussion.
We have asked for an oversight committee to held ensure transparency and safety for our law enforcement and our community.
Please. Please, consider allowing the city of the people, for the people, to help the people.
Thank you!
