Library & RFBC Activity Report - May 2026
Literacy / ESL
Adult Literacy and ESL had 70 volunteer tutors and adult learners practice reading, writing and speaking for a total of 410 hours throughout May. This included 31 active tutors contributing 244 hours and 39 active adult learners participating for a total of 166 hours.
The Adult Literacy Center hosted four Conversation Groups each week - three in person and one via Zoom - for a total of 15 sessions in May. Eighty-two participants from around the world practiced their listening and speaking skills with the support of 26 volunteer tutors and Adult Literacy/ESL staff.
In 2021, Adult Literacy Coordinator Mara Neuron matched one of her first learners, Patricia, to a tutor.
This month Patricia returned to the Adult Literacy Center as a new college graduate from California State University Channel Islands. Patricia came by to thank Library staff and the Adult Literacy program for helping her achieve a life-long dream of attending college. She received her BA in Psychology and has plans to start graduate school. Seeing Patricia with her new diploma was a wonderful reminder of the impact that tutors and learners have when they work together.

Understanding Social Security was led by Certified Financial Planner and Executive Vice President Hasan Najmuddin of Duncan-Newman Associates. The presenter simplified complex Social Security concepts, which helped seven attendees walk away with a solid grasp of the material and their questions answered. In addition, RFBC offered a Résumé Refresh workshop that helped participants build practical skills to tailor their résumés, ensuring they highlighted the specific experience, skills, and strengths employers seek.
Six people attended.
Maegan Profeta represented the Russell Fischer Business Collection (RFBC) at the Camarillo Job Fair, where she interacted with over 100 people about RFBC's job seeker resources. RFBC was delighted to donate a raffle prize of helpful books for job seekers to support the Camarillo Job Fair. This outreach effort increased awareness of RFBC’s current offerings to job seekers, which include new collection materials, a new database for job seekers called “My Jobs Library,” and Maegan’s Quick Résumé Reviews by appointment. She saw many hopeful job seekers who were grateful for assistance in their job search.
