Comments = Dear Members of the City Council,

This is in reference to item T. We are writing as concerned residents to ask for your immediate attention to the ongoing parking and traffic problems affecting our neighborhood due to the nearby high school. What was once a quiet residential street has effectively become an extension of the school’s parking lot and pickup area, creating daily disruptions for the people who live here.

During student drop-off and pickup times, parents routinely use our neighborhood streets to wait for their children, resulting in severe traffic congestion, blocked driveways, and unsafe conditions for residents attempting to enter or leave their homes. In addition, students and visitors attending school functions, and even non-school special events, frequently park throughout our neighborhood instead of using designated school parking areas. Residents are often unable to park near their own homes because the available spaces are occupied by individuals with no connection to the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the impact extends far beyond parking. Residents have witnessed littering, vandalism, and people urinating in bushes and on private property. These behaviors have diminished the quality of life in our community, left many residents feeling disrespected and ignored, and concerned about diminishing property values.

On multiple occasions, we have politely asked individuals to move their vehicles from directly in front of our homes or to be considerate of the neighborhood. Rather than responding respectfully, some have reacted with profanity, hostility, and denial. No resident should be subjected to verbal abuse simply for asking that their neighborhood be treated with basic courtesy and respect.

We understand that the school serves an important role in our community, and we support its mission. However, the burden of accommodating school traffic and parking should not fall entirely on the surrounding residents. We agree with the city’s proposal to post signs that enforce “permit parking only” and we are very grateful for the support. We respectfully ask the City Council to continue working with the school administration to identify meaningful solutions. Possible measures may include the school takes responsibility for establishing an ample amount of designated loading zones on school property and providing additional on-campus parking, including when they host special events outside school hours.

Our neighborhood deserves to be a place where residents can safely access their homes, park on their own streets, and enjoy their property without excessive congestion, property damage, or harassment. We very much appreciate the City Council’s efforts to investigate these issues and take action to restore the safety, accessibility, and livability of our community.

Thank you for your time, consideration, and commitment to serving our city’s residents. We appreciate your attention to this matter and hope to see meaningful action taken to address these ongoing concerns.

Sincerely,

Nathan and Caitlin Templeman
