Library & RFBC Activity Report
The Library kicked off celebrations for the 250th Semiquincentennial with a Colonial Music of the Signal Corps program on Sunday, July 5. The Los Angeles Fifes and Drums performed authentic signatures from the Signal Corps, a group of militia musicians used during the revolutionary war. Over 60 people attended and remarked that they enjoyed the unique experience that covered the nation’s history. In addition, the Library provided a Meet the Presidents program on July 22 that included actors representing George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses S. Grant to an audience of 124.

The Library’s Summer Reading Adventure programs continue to heat up with exciting offerings. On Wednesdays, the Children’s Department hosted Summer Reading Adventure
performers, drawing close to 300 participants each week. This month attendees enjoyed a Jack and the Beanstalk Puppet Musical and a Special Sing-Along with Craig Newton. Teens have also participated in teen summer programs, which included activities like musical karaoke, embroidery, arts and crafts, talent showcase, tie dye, and a murder mystery challenge. A total of 84 teens participated.

Children and teens are encouraged to read throughout the summer, and we’ve had 690 children and teens sign up for the Library’s Summer Reading Program.

Literacy / ESL
Adult Literacy and ESL had 62 volunteer tutors and adult learners practice reading, writing and speaking for a total of 416 hours throughout July. This included 27 active tutors contributing 191 hours and 35 active adult learners participating for a total of 225 hours.

The Adult Literacy Center hosted four Conversation Groups each week - three in person and one via Zoom - for a total of 17 sessions in July. Seventy-three participants from around the world practiced their listening and speaking skills with the support of 24 volunteer tutors and Adult Literacy/ESL staff.

Library Highlights (Cont’d.)
Camarillo Health Care District brought an immersive virtual reality adventure to the Library, giving 11 attendees the opportunity to explore destinations around the world without leaving the library. Participants experienced everything from Australia's Great Barrier Reef to a hot air balloon ride over Portugal. Whether trying virtual reality for the first time or returning for another experience, attendees enjoyed the interactive program and expressed interest in participating in more VR experiences offered by the Camarillo Health Care District.

Although the dedicated ESL Grant ended in June, the Library is happy to continue offering ESL services through our Adult Literacy Grant from the California State Library. California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) now includes ESL as part of Adult Literacy, allowing us to continue serving ESL learners in our community. A big thank you to all our volunteer tutors who work one-on-one with ESL learners and those who help with our Conversation Groups.

July is Disability Pride Month and Adult Services hosted The Upside of Downs at Mulberry Lane Farm, which is located in Somis. Farm owner, non-profit organization leader, and mother of two special needs adults, Karen Meier, gave an in-depth account of how the adult care program was started, as well as how the farm creates outreach and impact in the community. Karen partners with other adult care agencies to help clients learn-by-doing with hands-on tasks at the farm. This library program inspired a few patrons that were unfamiliar with the Mulberry Lane Farm community to understand more about the work they do and build a better connection. Despite the creation of Disability Pride Month in 1990, several patrons were learning about the celebration through the library’s displays and events which further promote inclusivity and tolerance.

Booked & Busy Bingo’s participation grew this month with 46 new sign-ups, bringing the summer total to 163.

The program encourages patrons to explore RFBC collections through business, career, and finance challenges.

Participants earn raffle entries for prizes from local businesses, strengthening community ties. The continued sign-ups underscore how gamified resources effectively engage patrons.

Russell Fischer Business Collection (RFBC) continued its summer programs that foster community engagement and connect patrons with local resources: the digital resource Summer on a Budget and the summer reading challenge Booked & Busy Bingo. Business Services Coordinator, Maegan Profeta, also helped support the library’s opening of the Work Space this month.

The Booked & Busy Bingo asks participants for their feedback when earning a badge. This feedback allows Maegan to help shape programming and the collection based on active patrons. For the badge “RFBC Great Idea”, patrons were asked to give an idea for an RFBC program. The most common responses were about financial literacy workshops, including budgeting, saving, and basic financial literacy for all age groups. This reinforces Maegan’s fall plans for a Money Made Simple workshop and teens financial literacy programming.

R U S S E L L F I S C H E R B U S I N E S S C O L L E C T I O N Maegan also supported the Library’s Open House for the Work Space, a no-cost coworking area designed for small groups of 4 to 15 people.

Event highlights included demonstrations of the Rally 65 Board and instructions on how to reserve the space. One of the attendees was Visit Camarillo, which plans to update its website to include this new community meeting resource.

The Summer on a Budget digital guide promotes budget-friendly local activities, including Camarillo’s trails and Summer Concert Series. The resource engaged 405 patrons this month, with 73% accessing it via on- site QR codes at the library. This program remains an effective tool for RFBC to help connect patrons with community offerings.

The beginning of August has RFBC helping parents with Get Ready for the School Year: Goals, Budget & Save Workshop. A Chase Community Manager will lead an interactive workshop on setting goals based on values, building a budget, and saving for the future. Attendees will be entered into a raffle for a backpack giveaway filled with a variety of school and office essentials in a range of colors. Both Summer on a Budget and Booked & Busy Bingo will conclude in August, featuring a raffle drawing to select three Bingo winners.
