Comments I’m encouraged to see Council bringing the Flock camera contract back on the agenda for an update and hopefully some meaningful discussion. During today’s update, I ask that council take a critical look at this contract and be mindful of balancing our resident’s expectations of privacy against the benefits of these cameras. Could similar results be achieved by more traditional policing and/or by a more limited, strategic deployment of these cameras? Do we have faith in this private company protecting our data from outside agencies and
potential misuse? Why have so many other cities and agencies been terminating their contracts with flock? Do we have any way to guarantee that additional types of data (such as facial recognition) will not be collected in the future or how our data will be utilized?
As a resident, I would prefer our tax dollars go to VC Sheriff to support additional police services and that we cut ties with

1 Flock. If that doesn’t happen, I would like to see the number of cameras reduced to a smaller pool of strategic locations, and that VC Sheriff release quarterly transparency reports detailing the data being collected and how it is being utilized. Even then, I believe that when we give a private company the ability to collect this kind of data on our residents that we have no way of being sure that it is being used as reported. I do not support my tax dollars funding a private surveillance network across our city.
