Library & RFBC Activity Report
On August 24 , the library partnered with Ventura County Works and the City of Camarillo for the Ready to Work Job Fair. Maegan Profeta introduced My Jobs Library, a new database feature connecting job seekers with employment opportunities, localized search filters, labor market insights, resume tools, and career coaching.
Maegan engaged with 27 attendees who expressed strong interest in this free tool and Maegan’s offered reference support for RFBC's career development resources. th
Celebrating another successful summer reading season, the library hosted a child-friendly techno dance party led by our own librarian DJ. Children enjoyed the opportunity to dance to energetic tunes, and families stated that it was a great way to end Summer Reading. 126 people attended. Over 130 patrons spread their blankets out on the back lawn to enjoy outdoor story time complete with nature-related songs, bubble play, and outdoor toys. Attendees expressed interest in more outdoor events as it enabled their children to engage in more active play than indoor activities allow. The library saw an 18% increase in summer reading participation this year with 842 children and teens participating.

Literacy / ESL
Adult literacy and ESL had 55 volunteer tutors and adult learners practice reading, writing and speaking for a total of 370 hours throughout August. This included 24 active tutors contributing 176 hours and 31 active adult learners participating for a total of 194 hours.
The Adult Literacy Center hosted four Conversation Groups each week- three in person and one via Zoom.
In over 17 sessions in August, 82 participants from around the world practiced their listening and speaking skills with the support of 24 volunteer tutors and Adult Literacy/ESL staff.
Tutor Janice had this to say about her learner Lupita: Lupita has been writing short summaries each week based on one or two chapters of The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave (Camarillo Reads Author). She also practices reading aloud with me each week and is open to pronunciation guidance and corrections. Most weeks, she also writes a short summary about a family outing or event. Reading, writing, and speaking English are Lupita’s goals, and she has been consistent and dedicated to making progress.
Library Highlights (Cont’d.)
On the cusp of summer transitioning into a new school year, Adult Services provided a program focused on stress management information and activities to 14 participants. Guest speaker Diane Martell from Dignity Health discussed different types of stress and how to reduce negative health effects. A variety of interactive stress management stations and take-away information were on hand as tools for future success. One patron was very pleased with the ideas presented and was excited to recreate and share the information with family and friends.
Teens let their creative juices flow, gathering to work on crochet projects during the library’s Hooked on Crochet program. Eleven participants learned new techniques from a librarian or a friend, while others worked on their existing skills.

Attendees gained foundational financial skills and received backpacks stocked with essential school supplies.
The Russell Fischer Business Collection (RFBC) concluded its summer initiatives this month: the digital guide Summer on a Budget and the summer reading challenge Booked & Busy Bingo. To assist families with back-to-school preparation, RFBC hosted the Get Ready for the School Year: Goals, Budget & Save Workshop. Additionally, Business Services Coordinator Maegan Profeta represented RFBC at the Ready to Work Job Fair.
The Booked & Busy Bingo program achieved a total summer participation of 184, including 18 new sign-ups this month.
Three raffle winners were selected to receive prize baskets featuring gift cards to local small businesses, reinforcing RFBC's commitment to supporting the local business community.
Highlighting the program's fun community impact, one winner, a dedicated library family patron, playfully refused to share their raffle prize with their children, who expressed good-natured jealousy upon seeing the RFBC prize basket.
