1. Why do you want to be a Planning Commissioner?
I sincerely think Campbell is the best city in the South Bay and I want to become more involved in making it even better. My husband and I are raising our two children here and I am deeply invested in the Campbell community we belong to. I know the Planning Commission is involved in many important decisions regarding the growth and development of the City, and I would like to be a part of those decisions. I think I would bring unique skills and perspective to the Commission. I am an attorney, and I know many of the decisions the Planning Commission makes must be within the bounds or confines of ordinances and regulations. I would be comfortable and knowledgeable making decisions in that setting.
2. Have you previously participated on committees, boards, etc., requiring a group decision-making/consensus-building process? If you have, list such experience.
Whether or not you have such experience, what do you think are the necessary prerequisites for successful group decision making?
I have been a member of the hiring committee for the District Attorney’s Office. As a member of that committee, I worked with other attorneys to interview candidates and review their qualifications. The committee members did not always agree on which candidates were the strongest. I had to advocate for my preferred candidates in a way that did not disparage other members of the committee. I also had to be entirely supportive of the committee’s ultimate decision, as I wanted every candidate we hired to be successful, no matter my personal view of them.
I am also a member of my office’s AI Working Group. Part of that responsibility was to help draft the AI use policy for the office. I had to work with other attorneys within my office that hold differing views than I do on the use of AI, and be able to produce one policy that would cover the whole office. I had to voice my opinion in a way that did not exclude others or alienate myself, and to compromise on issues where we did not see eye to eye.
Successful group decision making requires each individual feel comfortable voicing their opinion. The group members need to be willing to compromise with one another.
When the group decision is made, it is important for the group to present their conclusion with solidarity, even if the result does not perfectly reflect the opinion of each member.

3. Please describe an issue that was recently addressed by the Planning Commission and explain how you would handle a similar issue.
There was a property within my neighborhood that an overseas developer had purchased. The developer submitted plans to turn what was a single-family home into multiple temporary, dorm-style units. It was clear from the plans that the intent was not to have this property serve as permanent housing, but rather short-term rental rooms. I believed the developer wanted to take advantage of California’s new housing development laws and build an AirBnB-style rental property under the guise of a multiunit housing development. I believed this would not only change the character of the neighborhood, but also remove a home from the City at a time where housing capacity needs to be increased. I would have voted not to approve the plan. I want to see Campbell build more housing, but I do not want to see opportunists take advantage of the housing need and push forward disingenuous projects.
4. How would you attempt to help the City Council balance the need for community economic development vs. the need to maintain Campbell's "quality of life"? I know the City faces major pressure from the state to increase its housing capacity, and to do so quickly. I think that can be done without disrupting the character of the neighborhoods and subcommunities that already exist. I would want to focus housing development in areas that are accessible by public transit and can withstand an increase in traffic. I would want to ensure the City balances its increased housing capacity with an increased focus on maintaining and preserving our public spaces. I would want to welcome input from Campbell citizens that are expected to be affected by a new project at the front end. I think it’s best to address concerns early on with transparency and encourage creative problem solving.
5. What is good and worth preserving about the community today? What do you not like about Campbell?
I want to preserve Campbell’s affordability and accessibility. Many of the cities in the South Bay completely price out the working class. I feel Campbell has held onto an identity that allows for working, middle-class families to still enjoy everything the city has to offer. The downtown area is inviting and inclusive. The businesses and restaurants throughout the city are not simply chains and large corporations. The Community Center is accessible to a diverse range of people. The parks system is Item 3.1

extensive and modern. Campbell truly feels like a community where everyone is safe and welcome.
I do not like the number of vacant store fronts and properties in Campbell. I would like to see every store front in Downtown Campbell occupied. I would like to see large properties that have been left abandoned for years developed and filled. There are so many opportunities for businesses to thrive in Campbell and I’d like to see that happen.
6. How would you feel/react if the City Council overturned a decision of the Commission that you believed was the correct decision regarding a particular development proposal?
I would assume the Commissioners spent a lot of time working together to come up with what we thought was the best decision, so to have that decision rejected would at first be disappointing. But I would use that disappointment as motivation to fix it and try again. I would focus on the specific issue the Council had with our proposal and encourage my fellow Commissioners to come up with a new proposal that addresses that specific issue. Ultimately the Commission and City Council have the same goal – bettering Campbell. I would trust that the issue noted by the Council is an issue important to their constituents, and I would find a way to solve it.
7. How do you view the advisory role of a Planning Commissioner in relation to the City Council? In relation to the staff?
I view the Planning Commission as a focus group for the Council. We would look into the issues they ask us to and provide educated, researched answers and suggestions.
I imagine City staff are very busy and are responsible for many aspects of City operations. I would not expect City staff to be prioritizing the needs of the Commission.

PLANNING COMMISSION APPLICANT QUESTIONS
1. Why do you want to be a Planning Commissioner?
2. Have you previously participated on committees, boards, etc., requiring a group decision-making/consensus-building process? If you have, list such experience.
Whether or not you have such experience, what do you think are the necessary prerequisites for successful group decision making?
3. Please describe an issue that was recently addressed by the Planning Commission and explain how you would handle a similar issue.
i have lived in campbell for over 10 years. and have a love and passion for the city. i want to use my background from corporate life to help assist the city to achieve it's goals. I also would like to run for city council for my district at some point, and I believe this would help me prepare for that.
I going to enter year three of being on the board of the Parent Teacher Association at my Son's school St. Justin's in Santa Clara. I have worked in a corporate setting where I have managed commercial teams. I have worked closely with executives and board members to reach common goals in a group setting.
I know the planning commission approved the nighttime music from the Greek restaurant Elia. I appreciate the concerns around noise and changing the mood of the city life at night. I don't think I would change what the commission ultimately decided on. I believe it's important to have accountability and a revisit of the agreed upon terms when it comes to new policies, it gives time to adjust.

4. How would you attempt to help the City Council balance the need for community economic development vs. the need to maintain Campbell's "quality of life"?
5. What is good and worth preserving about the community today? What do you not like about Campbell?
This is an interesting question as the first portion is something you can use charts and excel to achieve. the hard part is to determine the moving target of whta is considered good quality of life. it's imporatnt ot survey people that live here and understand what they require for quality of life. Campbell as a city is getting younger with more younger families so it's important to adjust for that and listen to what those needs are.
What makes campbell unique is it's small-ish city feel when surrounded by larger cities around it. Things like the farmers market (it needs to go back to prepandemic days) and the various downtown activities like the car show, oktoberfest etc are big staples that define campbell. It's important to preserve the history while bringing some of it to the modern era. Which seg-ways me into what I don't like about campbell. I think it's worth it to allow larger shops/stores, tax revenue into the city to allow it to continually grow.

I would likely not feel good about it but I wouldn't react negatively about it. In corporate life, things get overturned by executives or board members all the time, it's just part of the job, and what you do is adapt, learn, and move forward.
honestly, I am a bit weak with this question since I have not done or seen done the roles of the planning commission, or city council and staff. I view the planning commission more so being the doers behind the scenes while the city council ultimately is accountable to the voting base.
