Report to Honorable Mayor and City Council
Tuesday, March 24, 2026, 3:00 PM
DISCUSSION 1. To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: David Roberts, City Manager {{department}} {{division}} Subject: CONSIDER AND DISCUSS RENAMING THE CÉSAR E. CHÁVEZ DAY TRIBUTE EVENT ANDRELATED RECOGNITIONS IN THE CITY OF CARSON (CITY COUNCIL) I. SUMMARY
This item is on the agenda at the request of Mayor Davis-Holmes and provides the City Council an opportunity toconsider and provide direction to City staff on whether to rename the City’s annual César E. Chávez Day TributeEvent and related recognitions, in the City of Carson. Currently, César E. Chávez Day is a state of California holiday that is observed by the City like all other stateholidays. State lawmakers have announced that they will consider renaming the holiday as Farmworkers Day.  This item is being brought forward in light of recent public discourse with regards to César E. Chávez.

II. RECOMMENDATION

1. CONSIDER and DISCUSS renaming the César E. Chávez Day Tribute Event and related recognitions in the City of Carson.

III. ALTERNATIVES
TAKE another action the City Council deems appropriate and that is consistent with applicable laws.

IV. BACKGROUND
The City of Carson has traditionally observed César E. Chávez Day with an annual tribute event recognizing the legacy of César Chávez and his contributions to labor rights and social justice. The event has served as an opportunity to educate the public and celebrate civic engagement.

Recently, public discussions about César E. Chávez have raised questions about whether the current event name remains appropriate or whether a broader or alternative framing is more appropriate. These discussions reflect a broader trend among public agencies reassessing commemorative programs named after César E. Chávez.

V. FISCAL IMPACT
There is no immediate fiscal impact associated with this discussion item. If a renaming is approved, minor costsmay be incurred for updating signage, promotional materials, and digital content.

VI. EXHIBITS
None.
