Title: Downtown Design Guidelines
RECOMMENDATION:
This item is presented for information, discussion and direction only.
BACKGROUND:
As part of the 2022 Council Goals, carried over from the 2021 Goals, a presentation of the Downtown Design Guidelines was requested by the Council.
The Downtown Design Guidelines were adopted in 2002 and intended to guide public and private de velopment in the Downtown in a manner consistent with the goals and objectives of the Guidelines. The Guidelines represent a culmination of previous plans and efforts begun in 1992 to revitalize the City’s historic downtown.
The Downtown is generally defi ned as the area from Bankside Drive, south of East Palm Canyon Drive, east to Date Palm Drive (see Attachment 1) and include the zoning designations of DRN (Downtown Residential Neighborhood) and MXC (Mixed Use Commercial), which were established with the Guidelines.
DISCUSSION:
The Guidelines have shaped the Downtown developments such as the Pickfair Promenade and Cathedral Towne Villas apartments. However, development trends , architectural design s and interest in the Downtown have changed and unexpected additions such as the Agua Caliente casino could not have been contemplated in 2002.
Therefore, it is prudent that the Guidelines be reviewed periodically and updated as needed to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the community.
FISCAL IMPACT:
