Planning Commission Membership Application
Honorable Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem, City Council Members
I would like to be considered for the open position on the Cathedral City Planning Commission.
Since moving to the city six years ago, I have been active in various local organizations, and I have previously served as a member of COPS, and the Parks and Community Events commission. I am currently a member of the Cannabis Task Force.
Through my work championing Measure B, I developed a keen interest in how planning and zoning decisions are made, and the impact those decisions may have particularly on our residential neighborhoods. In terms of planning and zoning, I believe in an approach that balances family life, housing and economic development. The city has made tremendous strides in that respect in the past five years, and I would like to help in continuing to move our city forward as a great place to both live and work, in line with the updated General Plan, and in accordance with adopted zoning and other ordinances, rules and regulations.
From my work with PACE, I believe I have shown my ability to research and report on issues, including the city's ordinances, policies and programs. I have been a regular attendee, not just at PACE meetings but also at council meetings and At Your Corner meetings, and would have no problem accommodating commission meetings on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
I believe I have demonstrated my willingness to assist in the implementation of various projects, not least of which was the preparation of budget proposals for the dog park and other park related improvements, many of which were subsequently adopted by the city council.
I 'work well with others'. I communicate and interact well with team members and stake-holders at all levels.
I am willing to attend any extracurricular meetings and training seminars appropriate to the position, and to work on any additional projects the city council requires.
In terms of experience, I have some understanding of planning processes, gained through the design and refurbishment of education centers in both the UK and US. As the Education Manager for an international computer company, I was responsible for the design of a new education center in London, and the redesign/refurbishment of another in New York City. As a result, I have a reasonable understanding of planning documents including site and floor plans.
However I do not pretend to have extensive experience in this field; I would rely on city staff to provide that expertise.

RE: Planning Commission Application
Dear Members of the City Council,
I submit this letter in support of my application for an appointment to the Cathedral City Planning Commission. My family and I will have lived in the city for twelve years in July 2022. Throughout this time, we have been fortunate to witness the many extraordinary and transformative changes that have occurred in our city. As a parent and homeowner in our community, I sincerely wish to be a part of this momentum in the future and am eager to do my part continuing the great progress that has been made in recent with respect to the development of our city.
Over the years in my work as an attorney, I have developed familiarity with, and acquired knowledge in, a number of areas that would prove useful to me if appointed to the Planning Commission. For example, I have worked on legal matters involving property rights, land-use regulations, homeowners' association rules and regulations as well as matters affecting the conduct and running of public boards and commissions.
In closing, I am mindful of the significant responsibility with which members of the Planning Commission are entrusted and I would enthusiastically and humbly strive to achieve serve our city and its residents in this role.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of my application.
Best Regards,
Christopher N. Mandarano

DOMENIC D. VERMEULEN (He/They)
• Cathedral City, CA • www.linkedin.com/in/domenicvermeulen Dear Tracey Martinez:
My name is Domenic Vermeulen, and I am applying to the open position on the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission. I am currently a Production HR Coordinator at Lionsgate Entertainment, working to implement Harassment Prevention and Diversity Training for productions across the company's Television and Motion Picture groups. I also work alongside Lionsgate/Starz's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on the DEI Content Review Committee, and hold a seat on the company's Production Inclusion Coalition.
Previously, I was a Physical Production Coordinator at AtE Studios, where I also served as Founder/Co- Chair of Pride @ AtE Networks, Co-Chair of the Employee Resource Group (ERG) Diversity Advisory Council, and a Board Member of the Human Impact Team. I've also held other Board Member roles on ERG councils at previous companies.
Professionally, my experience in project management, council leadership, and employee relations allows me to effectively coordinate and communicate with people, as well as identify and solve foreseeable problems before they come to fruition. My ability to remain organized and flexible in a fast-paced environment has granted me success while working under multiple high-level executives.
Furthermore, my role as a Development Advisory Board Member for The Dru Project has afforded me the opportunity to produce large-scale events, bringing community members together and building safe, inclusive spaces for queer youth. Collectively, these events have not only raised money for The Dru Project, but also found ways to encourage community members to become involved in the cause and build partnerships with local event spaces/small businesses.
Outside of my professional career, I am an active member of the theatre community in Cathedral City, having helped build sets for The Rocky Horror Picture Show and was selected to direct Xanadu, both with Desert Rose Playhouse. My partner and I also regularly attend performances and concerts at venues across the Coachella Valley, and see as many art museums or exhibits as possible when I am visiting him on tour.
In closing, I believe these skills, coupled with my passion for building inclusive communities, arts and entertainment, and for Cathedral City itself would make me a valuable asset to the Public Arts Commission. I am positive that the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission is an organization where I would continue to learn and grow as a team member while also bringing fresh, new ideas to increase community involvement within the arts.
I am available to meet for an interview at your convenience and can be reached at • Thank you for your time and consideration and I look
forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Domenic Vermeulen

Thank you for your willingness to serve your local government and community.
Dear Public Arts Commission & City Council,
I am delighted to submit myself as a candidate to serve the community of Cathedral City on the Public Arts Commission. I had previously applied and withdrawn before interviews took place in Summer 2018 due to an unexpected life change - I am happy to say that 1 am back and even better equipped to serve my community.
I was born and raised in the Coachella Valley, and am the daughter of two hard-working Mexican immigrants. In 2008 I was blessed with an academic scholarship to UC Berkeley as the first person in my large family to attend any sort of higher education institution, and after an eye-opening education in the areas of Public Policy and Political Economy, I embarked on a professional career in consulting for Federal government public programs and then moved into non-profit work to impact diversity & inclusion in the technology space. Today I work as a Digital Equity Program Manager for Michelson Philanthropies, trying to bridge the digital divide in under-resourced communities - to ensure all members of our communities can participate in society via affordable, reliable access to technology.
Throughout my career I have been able to travel and witness time and time again the positive impact of public art on the well-being of communities. From activist murals, to beautification projects, to sculptures that harness solar energy, to artworks meant to promote civic engagement - from Oakland to Medellin, Sydney to Rio, Singapore to Madrid - public art has proven a powerful and underused tool for connecting, recognizing, educating, and creating empathy.
During the pandemic, my sister and I helped create, launch, and organize a new community-led outdoor art market in the high desert, to provide a safe social space for the community - as well as a way to help artists preserve their source of livelihood when indoor markets, shops, museums, and galleries were not accessible. That was one of the most rewarding experiences.
Another art-driven project I worked on, for my previous Program Manager role at AnitaB.org, involved collaborating with an organization composed of illustrators who are women of color, to commission portraits for a group of diverse female leaders in technology - this project was aimed at raising the visibility of women both as artists and as technologists.
Every professional endeavor that I have dedicated myself to is linked by the mission of better serving others, and empowering others to better serve and connect with the world.
Over time, I have observed that my strengths are in my approachability and empathy; my familiarity with a broad spectrum of backgrounds and cultures; my passion for being a Lifelong learner and my enthusiasm in sharing what I learn with others; my ability to think creatively and get things done with limited resources; and my deep appreciation and respect for the act of serving others and helping shape their experiences to be the best that they can be as they navigate through the in-and-outs of life.
That last highlighted quality I owe to my father, a resilient human being with only a grade school education who immersed himself in the hospitality industry for over four decades.
With two full-time jobs, very little sleep, and a perpetually sunny attitude for half of a Lifetime, I'd proudly venture to say my father has been the most dedicated valet and bellhop to ever set foot in the Palm Springs area. His commitment to service in every small interaction continues to teach me about serving others. Because of him, being able to create positive experiences for the people within and passing through our city - and moreover to shape how they connect with each other - holds deep emotional and professional appeal.
My mother is an impressive copper sculpture artist who found calling later in life at 56, and has found inspiration & community via her art during these challenging, isolating times. Her work upcycles materials dumped in the desert or destined for the dump into beautiful interpretations of our native desert flora and fauna. Seeing herself as an artist has given her a new confidence, and a new understanding of how she can contribute to a better world. I would love to see more members of our community experience this.
I strongly believe that to excel in serving others, it takes a learned and practiced awareness, empathy, and respect for the experience of others. This allows one to more richly understand the spectrum of human experience and in turn, support individuals along that spectrum to a better place than where they were before they met you. I believe that I could bring such an awareness to this role.
It is also my strong belief that this city (and every city) needs representation from diverse groups (in age, occupation, race, religion, gender, and more) to better understand the challenges faced by, and create opportunities for, the diverse folks who live here.
As a woman, young business professional, as a first generation Mexican-American, as a first generation university graduate, as an advocate for STEM education and civic innovation, as a supporter of art in accessible public spaces, as an artist myself, and a family member of the large community of hospitality, construction, and transportation workers who provide the essential man-power for the Coachella Valley economy - I would love to see folks from each of those communities have more representation on all of the commissions.
The simplest example that I can use to express this is that we can't create, understand, and appropriately show appreciation for a complex, colorful masterpiece of a community - if we only have the capacity to see in, and create with, a limited set of colors. I would love to contribute to my city's abilities by adding my shade of experience.
I would like to end this letter with a quote that has resurfaced for me many a time throughout my work: "It took me quite a long time to develop a voice, and now that / have it, I am not going to be silent." Madeleine Albright, first woman to have become the United States Secretary of State
Sincerely,
Cristal Mojica

RE: Vacancy Appointment to Park and Community Events Commission Dear Honorable Mayor, Council Members and City Staff,
I am interested in an appointment to a position on the Parks and Community Events Commission. In the past 5 years, my involvement in the Coachella Valley remains strong with my volunteerism through Mt. San Jacinto State Park and the FIND Food Bank. But I always hoped to volunteer again for Cathedral City and give back directly to the community I live in. I feel an appointment to the Parks and Community Events Commission would be a good fit for me and the City.
From 2004-2006, I assisted in several events involving Cathedral City. I also served one year on the Public Arts Commission. Attached is a copy of my volunteerism and human relations experience. Unfortunately, my involvement with Cathedral City ceded due to my mother's illness and the care involved in her final years.
In my volunteerism and professional roles, I am regarded for my teamwork, communication skills, and contributions. While collaborating successfully in organizations, I have also proven to be effective and self-motivated.
I am available for an interview to further discuss my qualifications. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely Yours,
Rihard Marting

To whom it may concern:
As a homeowner, business owner, Certified Real Estate Appraiser, and Real Estate Broker based in Cathedral City, I am constantly looking for ways to assist in the progression of our beautiful city. I believe I would be a good fit for the Architectural Review Committee and would be honored to be given the opportunity to serve my hometown in this capacity.
I started my real estate career at the age of 17 as a real estate appraisal data entry assistant. I quickly worked my way up from there, passing the real estate appraiser trainee, licensed and certified tests within a matter of 5 years. At the age of 21, I was one of the youngest Certified Real Estate Appraisers in California. At the age of 25, I started a real estate appraisal firm, Hoss Appraisals, Inc. Since becoming licensed in 2007, I have completed over 10,000 appraisals throughout Southern California and the Phoenix metropolitan area. From small cabins in Idyllwild, glass cubes in Joshua Tree, mega-mansions in Beverly Hills and properties designed by noted architects such as Lloyd Wright, Eichler, and countless other architecturally significant properties.
To continually expand my professional role in the real estate industry and to help accommodate client's, friends and family members entering the real estate market, I decided to pursue a real estate salesperson license. In early 2016, I passed my licensee exam and then passed my broker's license exam in 2018. I have assisted in acquiring, renovating (including project management), listing, and selling properties throughout Southern California, for a wide range of buyers and sellers, from seasoned real estate investors to first time home buyers.
I currently live in Cathedral City Cove with my wife, Katie. We've never felt such a sense of place. This city has truly become our home! Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response. Please feel free to reach out if you need any additional information.

I have owned a home in Cathedral City Cove for 19 years. I care about our city and that is why I love being on the Architectural Review Committee and being part of moving the city forward.
For the last 8 years I have been a real estate agent, which gives me a insight to real estate and current trends.
Being an artist and photographer for almost 30 years gives me an appreciation of what works visual and what appeals to people.
I look forward to serving another term for the city to help it look good!
