Thank you for your willingness to serve your local government and community.

Thank you for the opportunity to apply for a position on the Cathedral City Historic Preservation Committee.

I became interested in historic preservation when I was elected Transportation Chair of the Hollywood Hills West Neighborhood Council (HHWNC) in the city of Los Angeles. As Transportation Chair, and later as Infrastructure Chair, I was a member of the Planning and Land Use Committee (PLUM). We frequently dealt with new developments near historic districts and buildings, including HPOZ (Historic Preservation Overlay Zones). It was then that I realized not only how many historic resources the city had, but how many had been destroyed over the years through development.

Historic buildings and neighborhoods ground cities and give them a lasting character which makes them places that people want to live in, invest in and visit. If we don't preserve our historic resources, every city becomes generic - no different than any other place. Protecting the historic character of a city is so important to keeping its legacy alive for future generations to appreciate.

Since Cathedral City is a fairly young city at only 40 years old, it is essential that we identify and protect our historic resources before they are replaced with new development. In addition, we must be cognizant of how new development meshes with nearby historic buildings. Like any city, Cathedral City has a special and interesting past that distinguishes it from neighboring towns. Investing in the protection of our historic resources will preserve the character of our city and make it a place that people are drawn to - whether to live, work or visit.

Cities can - and should - evolve to meet the needs of a growing population. But growth can be accomplished without erasing a city's unique history.

It would be my honor to help shape Cathedral City's strategy for preserving historic resources and protecting our city's character for years to come. Thank you so much for your consideration.

Regards,
Danielle Mead
