BACKGROUND:

At the September 12, 2023 Public Arts Commission meeting, the Commission considered a funding request from the S.C.R.A.P Gallery to support the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Cathedral City student art contest in the amount of $750 to be funded by the Public Arts Educational Fund. The S.C.R.A.P. Gallery is sponsoring the Dia de Los Muertos event at Desert Memorial Park on October 28, 2023, a traditional celebration to honor the memory of loved ones. The event promotes education, awareness, understanding and community building. The S.C.R.A.P. Gallery is requesting funding in the amount of $750 to support the student art contest portion of the event.

DISCUSSION:

During the discussion of the Commission, the Commission identified the requested funding could not be used for prizes for the arts contest pursuant to the Municipal Code.

Karen Riley from the S.C.R.A.P Gallery requested the funding request be modified to use the requested funds for art supplies and student art activities. The student art contest is open to all students from elementary school to high school aged. The event is free and open to the public.

FISCAL IMPACT:

At the end of FY 2022/23, there was $64,848.64 available for Arts Education and Events programs. The request being made by the S.C.R.A.P Gallery is $750.00.
