Expression of Interest: Finance Advisory Committee
Honorable Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem, and Council Members:
I would like to be considered for membership of the Finance Advisory Committee.
As you may be aware, 1 previously served on the Parks and Community Events Commission, and currently serve on both the Planning Commission and the Cannabis Task Force. Most recently, I was a member of the Ad Hoc Residents' Committee that produced the proposal for an increase in the Cathedral City sales tax.
I served as President of the residents' organization "Yes on B" which supported the council's ordinance limiting STVRs in the city. I also worked to support Measure K which, if it had passed, would have allowed the city to annex in to the DRD and construct a recreation center.
I have attended previous goal setting sessions for the city council, and I attended the full strategy sessions in 2023 and 2024 where the five year plan was built and amended.
Working across these various meetings, committees and commissions, I have gained knowledge related to the city's finances, and I believe that knowledge will assist me in working on the Finance Advisory Committee.
I also have a background in the commercial sector, holding senior management positions in the IT industry. I was formally the IT director for Oblix, an identity management company (subsequently acquired by Oracle), and Worldwide Education Manager for Tandem Computer systems, providing education resources and facilities in six different locations internationally. In those and other roles over a 30 year career, I was responsible for the management of large teams, resources and budgets.
In terms of the work required on this committee, I believe I can have a positive impact on discussions concerning how the city is meeting its planned objectives. I am also interested in improving education for residents to ensure a wider understanding of how city revenues are generated and spent. This will be especially relevant to the monitoring of spending on recreation, safety and road maintenance if the sales tax increase is approved. The Mission Statement for this committee includes advising the council on a number of other areas including the distribution of financial burdens across rate payers and enhancing the city's ability to generate revenue - all areas where I am ready to assist as required.
Respectfully submitted,
Danny Lee, 2/7/24
