City Council
Item No. 3.G
Meeting Date: December 10, 2025
From: George Crum, Police Chief
Title: Purchase of five unmarked vehicles for the Police Department.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the purchase of five (5) unmarked vehicles for the Police Department, to include the upfitting of emergency equipment from Dana Safety Supply.
BACKGROUND:
To support operational readiness, the Police Department seeks to replace four aging, high- mileage, unmarked vehicles and add one EV truck for the Community Services Officers (CSO). Generally, these unmarked vehicles are driven by staff assigned to the Detective Bureau and Administration.
Two unmarked units have already been sold at auction after repair estimates exceeded their remaining value, and a third unmarked unit is experiencing significant mechanical issues, making repairs economically impractical. One unmarked Ford Explorer still in use has over 120,000+ miles, which generally exceeds the mileage for vehicles in police fleets.
Staff has been looking to evolve the Police Department fleet to more eco-friendly vehicles.
Two EV vehicles have recently been purchased, with one currently in service with the Citizens on Patrol. The purchase of one Chevrolet Silverado EV for the CSO’s provides a more economical vehicle with less maintenance but still provides the ability to pick up and haul bulk items recovered in the field.
DISCUSSION:
Staff is looking to replace the mentioned four aged vehicles and acquire an EV vehicle for the CSO’s.
Staff has worked with various vendors and has determined the following vehicles will meet the Police Department’s needs.
(1) Ford Explorer
(1) Chevrolet Traverse
(1) Chevrolet Equinox
(1) Chevrolet Blazer
(1) Chevrolet Silverado EV
Staff has secured three quotes from various vendors, including local vendors for the above- mentioned vehicles. All of the vehicles being purchased are currently in stock with the vendor that was selected. Two local dealerships had vehicles on order, but there was no delivery time available.
