Parks and Community Events Commission
Item No. 2.A
Meeting Date: October 7, 2025
From: John A. Corella, Director of Public Works
Sponsors: Vice Chair Antonio Baciu and Chair Erin Hyland Title: Yoga in the Park 2026 Season
RECOMMENDATION:

Recommend the Parks and Community Events Commission (PACE) approve the continuation of Tuesday Yoga in the Park classes at the Cathedral City Community Amphitheater from January 27 through March 31, 2026, and authorize allocation of $3,000 from the PACE Small Events Budget and forward the program and funding request to the City Council for final consideration and approval.

BACKGROUND:

The Parks and Community Events Commission (PACE) is dedicated to promoting community engagement and enhancing awareness of the city’s park resources. As part of the Fiscal Year 2025–2026 budget, PACE was allocated $10,000 annually to support small- scale events in city parks. Funds may be used for services, materials, or a combination of both, with proposals reviewed and recommended by PACE before City Council consideration.

Over the past four fiscal years, the City Council has approved SUPs for free community yoga classes at the Cathedral City Community Amphitheatre. These classes, held on Tuesdays from January through March, have consistently drawn 50–100 plus participants per session and received positive community feedback. Based on this success, PACE recommends continuation of the program for the 2026 season.

DISCUSSION:

The 2026 Yoga in the Park program will offer two weekly sessions:
8:30–9:30 a.m.: Gentle Yoga, instructed by Nicole Cuhney 10:00–11:00 a.m.: Power Yoga, instructed by Patty Wexler A total of 20 classes are planned, with the following budget:
Instructor fees: $2,900 (20 classes at $145 each, with a 24-hour cancellation policy)
Incidentals and printed materials: $100
Total: $3,000
PACE Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Budget Recap $10,000
Halloween Dog Contest Panorama Park (10/20/25) $100
Feliz Navi Dog Contest at Esperanza Park (12/6/25) $300 Yoga in the Park 2026 Season (if approved) $3,000
Remaining Available Budget $6,600
After this allocation, the remaining PACE Small Events budget for FY 2025–2026 will be $6,600.

Given the program’s strong attendance and positive community response, continuing these classes represents a valuable use of PACE funds and supports the City’s mission to provide recreational opportunities in its parks.

NEXT STEPS:

Upon PACE approval, the funding request will be forwarded to the City Council for final consideration and approval.
