Staff Report
Parks and Community Events Commission
Cathedral City
Item No. 3.A
Meeting Date: March 3, 2026
From: John A. Corella, Director of Public Works
Sponsors: Chair Erin Hyland and Commissioner Ashley McGullam Title: Family Fitness Festival
RECOMMENDATION:

Recommend the Parks and Community Events Commission (PACE) support and approve the Family Fitness Festival at the Cathedral City Community Amphitheater on April 4, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and recommend allocation of $2,000 from the PACE Small Events Budget for event expenditures and forward the funding request to the City Council for final consideration and approval.

BACKGROUND:

The Parks and Community Events Commission (PACE) provide opportunities to engage the community and raise awareness of park resources throughout the city. As part of its charge, the Commission may initiate, review, and support community events and programs that promote recreation, health, and community engagement. Not all PACE supported events or programs require financial assistance from the Commission some may be implemented using partnerships, volunteer efforts, or existing resources without a direct cost.

PACE maintains an annual Small Events budget of $10,000, which may be used to fund all or a portion of community events held in city parks. When requested, eligible expenses may include services, materials, or other support needs necessary to enhance an event's success.

Proposed small events and programs at the city's parks are typically brought forward, presented and reviewed by the PACE. The PACE may choose to support an event regardless of whether funding is requested. If small events funding is recommended by the PACE, small event funding is then forwarded to City Council for the final approval of the funding.

DISCUSSION:

The proposed Family Fitness Festival is a free, community-oriented event designed to promote physical activity, wellness, and community connection.

The event was originally scheduled for March 14, 2026; however, due to scheduling conflicts at the Amphitheater, the proposed date has been moved to Saturday, April 4, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cathedral City Amphitheatre. The event will remain free and open to all community members.

The festival will be conducted in partnership with local fitness professionals and businesses, offering a series of 20-minute workout sessions throughout the morning. Planned activities include dance cardio, interval training, Pilates, yoga, and a sound bath. Several sessions will be offered bilingually in English and Spanish to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for a broad cross-section of the community. The event is designed to be family-friendly and encourage participation across generations.

Refreshments will be provided by Big Juice Bar and Starbucks. Music for the event will be provided by a local DJ.

The event will conclude with a "Connect and Reflect" period from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m., featuring community information tables set up at existing picnic tables at no additional cost.

Organizers are coordinating with local organizations, service providers, and businesses to participate and share information about programs, services, and wellness resources available in the community. Anticipated participants may include In-Shape Fitness, Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness, the Parkinson's Organization, Desert Recreation District (DRD), the Cathedral City Senior Center, Boys & Girls Club of Cathedral City, Cathedral City Police and Fire Departments, Friends of the Desert Maps, Legendary Glutes, Fit at 42, Roll Dogs Jiu-Jitsu and Big 5 Sporting Goods, or similar organizations.
