Self-Employed Electrical Contractor

My name is Colby Gregory, and I respectfully submit this letter to express my interest in being appointed to the Cathedral City Historical Preservation Committee. I am a lifelong resident of Cathedral City and have a strong personal and professional interest in preserving the history, character, and identity of the community that has shaped my life.

Why I wish to be considered for appointment

Cathedral City is the only place I have ever called home. I grew up here, attended school here, and today my wife and I are raising our three children here, just a few miles from where my parents still live. Because of these deep roots, I feel a responsibility to help protect the history and stories that define our city. Historic buildings, neighborhoods, and landmarks are more than structures they are tangible reminders of where we came from and how this community was built.

I believe historical preservation plays a critical role in maintaining community identity, fostering civic pride, and ensuring that growth and development respect the character of our city. I am motivated to serve on this committee because I want future generations—including my own children—to understand and appreciate Cathedral City’s past while thoughtfully planning for its future.

Relevant experience and knowledge

Professionally, I am the owner and operator of Gregory Electric, an electrical contracting business based in Cathedral City. As a small business owner and licensed contractor, I regularly work with building plans, codes, permitting processes, and renovations—often involving older structures. This experience has given me a practical understanding of how preservation goals can be balanced with safety standards, modern infrastructure needs, and responsible development.

Running a business has also provided me with experience in reviewing plans, managing budgets, evaluating long-term impacts, and making careful, well-informed decisions. These skills are directly applicable to the work of the Historical Preservation Committee, particularly when reviewing proposed changes to historic properties or advising on preservation-related policies.

Beyond professional experience, my lifelong connection to Cathedral City has given me familiarity with many of its historic neighborhoods, buildings, and evolving community identity. I value thoughtful preservation that respects history while allowing the city to remain functional, accessible, and inclusive.

If appointed, I would approach this role with care, curiosity, and a collaborative mindset. I am committed to listening, learning from fellow committee members and staff, and contributing in a way that supports the committee’s mission and the broader interests of Cathedral City.

Thank you for your time and consideration. It would be an honor to serve the community in this capacity.

Respectfully,

Colby Gregory
