Meeting Date: May 27, 2026
From: Ryan Hunt, Director of Communications & Engagement Title: Spring 2026 Special Events Season Recap
RECOMMENDATION:
This item is informational only — no Council action is required.
BACKGROUND:
The Communications & Events Division produces and supports a calendar of signature special events designed to drive tourism, community engagement, and economic activity in Cathedral City. The spring 2026 season — running from February through early May — featured four signature events at the Cathedral City Community Amphitheater and Downtown core: Tastes & Sounds of Cathedral City (Spring), the 10th Annual Cathedral City LGBT+ Days, the Inaugural Cathedral City Festival of the Arts, and the 10th Annual Taste of Jalisco Festival, alongside a robust schedule of additional community programs, PACE-supported activities, and third-party Special Use Permit events hosted at City venues throughout the season.
This staff report provides Council with a recap of the season, highlighting the four signature events as well as the additional programming that rounded out the spring calendar.
DISCUSSION:
Tastes & Sounds of Cathedral City — Spring Season (Feb. 10 – April 7): The third season of the free Tuesday evening series delivered another record-setting run. The Dreamboats broke the amphitheater's all-time attendance record for the second consecutive year with 2,200+ attendees on Feb. 24, surpassing their own 2025 mark. The Cat City Drag Race on March 3 served as the official LGBT+ Days kickoff.
Cathedral City LGBT+ Days — 10th Anniversary (March 6–8): California's first Pride of the year marked its milestone anniversary under the theme "CommUNITY Strong," presented by Agua Caliente Casinos. The weekend drew more than 12,000 attendees, with David Archuleta headlining the largest single-day crowd in amphitheater history. The inaugural CommUNITY Strong Walk benefited the Human Rights Campaign, and the City received the HRC Community Leadership Award.
Inaugural Cathedral City Festival of the Arts (March 28): The Public Arts Commission's first-ever festival featured a strong roster of regional artists alongside an all-day jazz and blues performance by Grammy-nominated Yve Evans & Friends, sponsored by Tastes & Sounds. The event launched a new spring tradition and proved a workable Fine Arts & Blues pairing model.
Taste of Jalisco Festival — 10th Anniversary (May 1–3): The 10th anniversary edition moved to a new spring date and expanded across the full Downtown footprint, honoring 30 years of the Cathedral City–Tequila, Jalisco Sister City relationship. Programming included the Gold Medal Tequila Tasting Competition, tribute performances on Saturday, and Masked Republic's Lucha Libre Mexicana closing out Sunday at the amphitheater.
Additional Spring Programming: Beyond the signature events, the Community Amphitheater and Downtown venues hosted a full calendar of community and partner programming, including the weekly Yoga at the Amphitheater series and the Color the Spectrum Autism Art Festival (March 22). Third-party Special Use Permit events continued to grow, including the Palm Springs Friends of Philharmonic's Sinfonica de Mineria Free Day of Music & Festival (January) and the Soul Springs Festival (February). PACE-supported programming and ongoing partnerships with community organizations rounded out the season.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with this informational report. Individual event budgets were approved through the FY 2025-26 budget process and through previously approved sponsorship and revenue-sharing agreements.
FIVE-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN:
The spring 2026 special events season directly advanced multiple Strategic Plan goals:
Action F-3 (Promote additional community events and celebrations) — directly accomplished through the production of all four signature spring events. Action F-6 (Develop and implement a plan to improve and diversify communication methods with residents) — supported through expanded outreach via GED Magazine, KGAY Radio, Gay Desert Guide, El Informador, and Spanish-language partners promoting LGBT+ Days and Taste of Jalisco.
Action E-14 (Renew and improve event safety planning, protocols and standards) — applied across record-attendance events at the Community Amphitheater and Downtown footprint.
Goal B (Community Investment) and Goal F (Embracing, Inclusive Community) — broadly advanced through programming that drove tourism, boosted Downtown businesses, and celebrated the City's diversity.
