RECOMMENDATION:

To accept the Public Arts Commission Recommendation to purchase “Great Scott”, a sculpture by Karen and Tony Barone, to be Installed at Panorama Park adjacent to the dog park and authorize the purchase and installation of the sculpture in a not to exceed amount of $38,380.

BACKGROUND:

At the City Council meeting on January 28, 2026, during a presentation on the activities of the Public Arts Commission, Mayor Gregory requested that the Commission work on acquiring a public art piece for Panorama Dog Park. At the Public Arts Commission meeting on February 10, 2026, Chair Liebelt and Vice Chair Travis were appointed to a subcommittee to seek out sculpture options to purchase. All of the PAC commissioners were asked to submit any recommendations to the subcommittee to review.

DISCUSSION:

At the May 12, 2026 Public Arts Commission meeting, the commissioners reviewed and considered sculptures from two artists – Karen and Tony Barone and Kat Trevino.

Karen and Tony Barone are a pair of well-known local artists celebrated for their vibrant larger than life whimsical sculptures. Through their collaborative work, they have brought color, character, and inspiration to communities across the Coachella Valley and beyond.

Their artistic vision reflects a passion for storytelling, cultural expression, and creating meaningful spaces that connect people through art. From March 15 through April 20, 2025, the Public Arts Commission hosted an exhibit of fifteen sculptures by Karen and Tony Barone in Town Square.

Kat Trevino is a Los Angeles–based multidisciplinary artist whose work blends photography, digital media, painting, sculpture, and public art into immersive, dreamlike compositions.

Known for her distinctive style, which she calls “Kattmospheres,” Trevino creates surreal imagery that invites viewers into worlds where imagination and reality intersect. Kat was one of the twenty-four artists who painted a bench at Ocotillo Park. Kat submitted a series of sculptures for consideration.

After reviewing the submitted proposals, the Public Arts Commission voted unanimously and recommend Great Scott, an oversized, green Scottie dog by Karen and Tony Barone to be the sculpture installed at Panorama Park.
