Letter of Interest – Parks and Community Events Commission Dear Members of the Selection Committee,
I am writing to express my sincere interest in being considered for appointment to the Cathedral City Parks and Community Events Commission.
I am a lifelong resident of Cathedral City born and raised here. While I have lived in different areas throughout the Coachella Valley in my adult life, Cathedral City has always been home. It is where I return, where my roots are, and where my immediate and extended family have lived for over 50 years. This deep connection gives me a personal and long-standing investment in the well-being, growth, and future of our community.
I previously served on the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission, where I contributed to advancing community arts and cultural initiatives. This experience gave me valuable insight into how city commissions operate, and the importance of community voice in decision-making.
My passion for this work comes from both my professional background and lived experience. I am an educator, community leader, and founder of initiatives focused on resilience, youth development, and community wellness. Throughout my career, I have worked extensively with children, teens, and families, designing programs that foster emotional intelligence, leadership, and a sense of belonging. I have led community-based projects that bring people together through meaningful engagement, including wellness workshops, youth leadership development programs, and trauma-informed practices that support healthier communities.
I bring a unique lens to parks and recreation, one that sees these spaces not just as physical environments, but as essential hubs for connection, healing, and growth. I believe parks and community events have the power to positively impact mental health, strengthen families, and build stronger neighborhoods.
In addition to my program development experience, I am skilled in collaboration and systems thinking. I have partnered with schools, nonprofits, and community organizations to expand access to resources and create equitable opportunities for underserved populations. I am especially passionate about ensuring that parks and programming reflect the diverse needs and cultures of our community, and that all residents feel seen, welcomed, and empowered to participate.
It would be an honor to serve the city that has shaped me. I am eager to contribute my experience, energy, and vision to the Parks and Community Events Commission and to help strengthen opportunities for connection, wellness, and community pride across Cathedral City.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Denise Rodriguez Bowman MSW
