Subject: Art Sculpture for Esperanza Park – Constructability and Maintenance Evaluation
Date: May 21, 2026
1. Charla Elizabeth – “The Flower of Esperanza”
12-foot powder-coated steel sculptural flower form
Constructability Evaluation
Advantages
Relatively straightforward fabrication using rolled and welded steel members. Uses conventional structural materials (A500 steel, welded construction, concrete foundation). No moving/kinetic parts, reducing mechanical complexity. Includes preliminary engineering approach and conceptual foundation details. Moderate height (~12 ft) lowers structural and wind-loading concerns compared to taller concepts.
Concerns
Multiple curved/tapered members will require custom rolling and precision welding. Internal lighting and concealed electrical routing may complicate fabrication and future access. Curved members may encourage climbing by children despite stated safety considerations. No mention if the metal finish surface of the sculpture will be polished or brushed. o Polished finish: the powder coat often leads to poor adhesion and peeling. o Brushed finish is preferred
Maintenance Evaluation
Advantages
Powder-coated steel is generally durable and maintainable in desert environments. Individual LED fixtures can reportedly be replaced independently. Simple overall material palette limits maintenance complexity.

Constructability and Maintenance Evaluation
Concerns
Powder coating in high-UV desert conditions will eventually fade and require recoating over time.
Curved geometry creates multiple surfaces where dust accumulation and bird activity may occur.
Lighting system introduces ongoing electrical maintenance. If coating is damaged, localized corrosion may occur at welds and joints.
Overall
This sculpture is one of the more balanced options from a constructability and maintenance standpoint.
2. Eileen Gay – “Alight”
Butterfly and rainbow-column mosaic sculpture concept
Constructability Evaluation
Advantages
Uses relatively simple vertical pipe structures and conventional footings. Modular installation approach.
Lower structural complexity than branching or cantilevered forms.
Concerns
Mosaic application is labor-intensive and highly detail dependent. EPS (expanded polystyrene) armature and cementitious shell system may be more vulnerable to cracking over time in extreme heat cycles.
Multiple butterfly attachments create long-term durability concerns under wind loading. Construction quality becomes highly dependent on craftsmanship and adhesion performance. Numerous small mosaic components increase risk of vandalism and material failure.
Maintenance Evaluation
Advantages
Individual mosaic repairs are technically possible.
Concerns
Highest maintenance burden of all proposals.
Mosaic tiles, grout, and adhesive systems are susceptible to:
o cracking,
o delamination,
o vandalism,
o fading,
o and difficult spot repairs.
Desert heat and thermal expansion can accelerate grout deterioration. Cleaning and graffiti removal are more difficult than smooth metal surfaces. Long-term matching of replacement mosaic materials may become problematic.
Art Sculpture for Esperanza Park
Constructability and Maintenance Evaluation
Overall
This sculpture presents the greatest long-term maintenance risk and highest lifecycle maintenance burden.
3. CJ Rench – “Crimson Sentinel”
Large-scale red yucca inspired sculpture with acrylic light elements
Constructability Evaluation
Advantages
Primarily steel fabrication using conventional methods. Slip-on concealed mounting system is efficient for installation. Vertical landmark form is structurally rational and buildable.
Concerns
Taller structure (12–15 ft) increases wind and foundation demands. Multiple branching stalks and acrylic inserts create more fabrication complexity than “The Flower of Esperanza” from Charla Elizabeth proposal.
Patina finish consistency may vary over time.
Acrylic leaf elements may become brittle or discolored after prolonged UV exposure despite UV stabilization.
Maintenance Evaluation
Advantages
Stainless steel and weathered steel are generally durable materials. Patina finish minimizes repainting requirements.
Corten steel works well in the desert as decorative metal.
Concerns
Acrylic elements remain a maintenance concern in desert sun exposure and blowsand. Complex branch geometry increases cleaning difficulty. Potential for bird nesting and/or perching in upper elements. Night lighting and translucent components introduce future maintenance and replacement needs.
Overall
This sculpture has relatively durable materials. Constructability is reasonable, though somewhat more complex than “The Flower of Esperanza.”

4. CJ Rench – “Esperanza Rising”
Vertical stainless-steel beacon-style sculpture with dichroic acrylic core
Constructability Evaluation
Advantages
Clean vertical geometry simplifies fabrication compared to branching forms. Stainless steel provides excellent durability.
Fewer protruding elements reduce structural vulnerability.
Concerns
Dichroic acrylic core system is specialized and may require custom fabrication and replacement. Hidden mounting and hollow-form fabrication require precision manufacturing. Reflective surfaces may show fingerprints, scratching, and dust more easily.
Maintenance Evaluation
Advantages
Probably the lowest structural maintenance burden of all four concepts. Stainless steel performs well in desert climates.
Simpler geometry improves cleaning access.
Minimal crevices and fewer projecting elements reduce vandalism exposure.
Concerns
Dichroic acrylic may discolor, crack, or require replacement over time under UV exposure. Specialty replacement materials may be expensive or difficult to source years later. Fingerprints, water spotting, and dust accumulation may be visually noticeable on polished finishes.
Overall
From a maintenance and constructability standpoint, this is likely the cleanest and most durable long- term solution, provided the acrylic elements are properly engineered and replaceable.

Recommendation
Recommended Option:
1st Choice — CJ Rench “Esperanza Rising”
This proposal appears to provide the best overall balance of:
constructability,
long-term durability,
and manageable maintenance obligations.
The simplified vertical form, stainless steel construction, and reduced number of exposed projecting elements make it the most practical long-term public infrastructure/art investment.
2nd Choice — Charla Elizabeth “The Flower of Esperanza” Although the curved geometry and lighting features may require additional maintenance compared to simpler forms, the overall design remains reasonably durable and maintainable for a public setting.
Not Recommended from Maintenance Standpoint
Eileen Gay “Alight”
The mosaic/concrete system presents the highest long-term maintenance exposure, particularly in a desert environment with heat cycling, vandalism potential, and grout/tile deterioration concerns.
