Staff Report
Public Arts Commission
Item No. 3.B
Meeting Date: May 12, 2026
From: Anne V. Ambrose, Assistant City Manager
Sponsors: Chair Craig Liebelt, Vice Chair Rick Travis
Title: Review and Consider Selection of a Sculpture for Panorama Park RECOMMENDATION:

Review and consider sculpture options for installation at Panorama Park adjacent to the dog park and provide a recommendation to the City Council.

BACKGROUND:

At the City Council meeting on January 28, 2026, during the presentation on the activities of the Public Arts Commission, Mayor Gregory asked if the Commission would work on acquiring a public art piece for Panorama Dog Park. At the February 10, 2026 meeting, the Public Arts Commission heard an introduction of this request and appointed Chair Liebelt and Vice Chair Travis to a subcommittee to seek out sculpture options. Staff has also sought input from all of the commissioners to submit any recommendations on sculptors or sculptures that the subcommittee could review.

DISCUSSION:

To date, two sculptors have been brought forward by Chair Liebelt for consideration.

First are a selection of sculptures submitted by Karen and Tony Barone. The sculptures range from dogs and cats and other animal-like figures to an ice cream bar. Images of each sculpture are attached to the staff report and pricing is as follows:

Name of Sculpture Price
CREAMSICLE DREAMSICLE $15,000
PLAYFUL PINK POODLE $21,000
HAPPY $16,000
MASTER CODY $19,000
GREAT SCOTT $16,000
DOG WALKER $ 21,000
GOLDEN CATALYST $15,000
CATALYST VERTE $15,000
CAT PEOPLE $21,000
Second are two pieces submitted by Kat Trevino. The two pictures were renderings of sculptures she developed for Palm Springs but has expressed interest in creating a sculpture for Cathedral City with wind elements painted with color changing paint. Images of each sculpture are attached to the staff report. Additional information on pricing is not currently available.

Mayor Raymond Gregory would like to see the commission advance this project and bring a concept to the City Council for approval.

FUNDING SOURCE:

This project will be funded through the Art in Public Places fund. When a sculpture is selected, a full budget, including costs for the base, installation, and any electrical will also need to be developed.
