Letter of Intent: Architectural Review Committee Appointment Dear Mayor Gregory and Members of the City Council,
I am submitting my letter of intent for appointment to the Architectural Review Committee. As a resident and active participant in local government, I understand that the design and appearance of development projects play a critical role in shaping the identity, character, and long-term quality of life in Cathedral City.
My background in governance, land use, and regulatory review has given me experience evaluating projects for consistency with adopted standards and policies. Through my work with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Indian Planning Commission, and other public service roles, I have reviewed development-related issues, assessed compatibility, and worked within structured regulatory frameworks experience directly relevant to the responsibilities of this Committee.
I understand that the role of the Architectural Review Committee is to ensure that projects comply with the City’s Development Code as it relates to architectural design, site planning, and landscaping, while also contributing to a cohesive and well-planned built environment. This includes evaluating whether projects are not only compliant, but also appropriate within their surrounding context.
In a desert environment like Cathedral City, thoughtful design must also reflect climate- appropriate and sustainable practices, including drought-tolerant landscaping, efficient water use, and materials that are suited to long-term durability in our climate. These considerations are essential to ensuring that development is both visually cohesive and environmentally responsible.
At the same time, consistency in design review is critical. Approving projects that do not fully meet established standards or applying those standards inconsistently can lead to long-term impacts on neighborhood character and overall development quality. It is important that decisions are grounded in clear, consistent application of the Code to avoid unintended or lower- quality outcomes.
I bring a detail-oriented and objective approach to this role. I am comfortable reviewing plans, identifying inconsistencies, and asking questions to ensure that projects meet both the letter and intent of the Development Code. I also understand the importance of providing clear and thoughtful recommendations to the Planning Commission when applicable.
If appointed, I will approach this role with a focus on consistency, accountability, and thoughtful design, ensuring that development in Cathedral City reflects both community standards and long-term planning goals.
Thank you for your consideration. I would be honored to serve.
Respectfully,
Sunshine Herrera
