Title: 2026-2027 California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program
RECOMMENDATION:
To approve a resolution accepting the FY2026/2027 California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Front Grant in the amount of $25,152 and authorizing the City Manager or his designee to execute all related documents.
BACKGROUND:
Recognizing the needs of the community for additional traffic safety and enforcement opportunities, the Cathedral City Police Department applied to the California Highway Patrol for a Cannabis Tax Fund Grant. The purpose of the Grant is to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in traffic collisions by impaired drivers (alcohol and drugs). The grant provides overtime funding for 24 DUI (driving under the influence) saturation patrols during the period of the grant.
DISCUSSION:
The grant period is for one year, starting on July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. The program will cover DUI enforcement with specific concentration on driving under the influence of drugs. These operations are designed to earn media attention to enhance the overall deterrent effect of impaired driving. The department plans to conduct 24 DUI saturation patrols during the grant period to reduce DUI related traffic collisions and in an effort to bring more attention to the issues of DUI within the community.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The overtime for the DUI operations will be fully funded by the grant, in an amount not to exceed $25,152 during the grant period.
