Background: In 2018, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) performed a s eismic assessment of its Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant and Chlorination Facility that supports its water distribution and delivery system in the East Bay. As a result of the assessment, SFPUC determined that the aqua ammonia tank supports and a ppurtenant structural e lements at the S unol Valley Water Treatment Plant and Sunol Valley Chlorination Facility required repairs and replacement to ensure structural reliability and adherence to
Level of Service goals
associated with seismic reliability and as required by Alameda County.

The SFPUC also determined that re placement of the existing aqua ammonia tanks was necessary to ensure that the SFUPC meets its water quality Level of Service goal.

To accomplish needed repairs and tank replacement, SFPUC required the services of a hazardous waste contractor to prepare a safety plan and coordinate vapor -free cleaning and disposal of the existing a qua ammonia tanks. Additional davit arms and platform ladders are required to access and safely lift the manhole covers due to the weight of the stainless steel on the new aqua ammonia tanks.
