Subject: San Francisco groundwater

Dear PUC Commission,
I appreciate your safeguarding San Francisco's water supply.

San Francisco's Recreation and Park Department has been installing artificial turf around San Francisco.

Artificial turf is widely recognized as a source of environmental pollution both in the form of microplastics and petrochemical toxins.

In March of this year the California Environmental Protection Agency released a draft Synthetic Turf Study.
https://oehha.ca.gov/sites/default/files/media/2025-03/DraftTurfReport031325.pdf The California EPA detected chemicals in biofluids and air samples using a methodology to distinguish the source as "synthetic turf, and not to other environmental sources like industrial facilities and traffic." See page 3-33 of the above linked report.

I am comparing these chemicals to the list of chemicals detected in San Francisco's groundwater as reported in the PUC's 2024 Annual Groundwater Monitoring Report Westside Basin. https://www.sfpuc.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2024_Annual_WSB_GW_Mon_Report.pdf (pages 539-540)
I have not yet cross-referenced each chemical but I do see that Styrene is attributed to artificial turf and also detected in our groundwater. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, "Chronic exposure [to Styrene] affects the central nervous system showing symptoms such as depression, headache, fatigue, weakness, and may cause minor effects on kidney function." Many of the chemicals attributed to artificial turf are harmful to humans and the environment. For example, 1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene is described as: Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects; Avoid release to the environment
https://www.fishersci.co.uk/store/msds?partNumber=11361607&countryCode=GB&language=en The runoff from the acres of artificial turf installed by SF RPD is carrying harmful petrochemicals and microplastics into our groundwater. RPD is planning to install another 17 acres of artificial turf at Crocker Amazon Park.

As protector of our drinking water, which is now a blend of groundwater and Hetch Hetchy water, I ask you to please block further installation of artificial turf in San Francisco.

Thank you,
Susan Mullaney
