PUBLIC HEARING
REDISTRICTING DRAFT MAPS
City Clerk Balz announced that there were Chinese and Spanish interpretation services available in the Community Room located in the back of the Council Chambers for any member of the public requiring interpretation services, and she inquired if anyone required translation services. She introduced Andres Marquez, Reliable Translations Spanish Interpreter and Felix (Wen Hao) Zhang, Cantonese and Mandarin Interpreter who repeated the announcement in their respective languages.
Following the announcement, she introduced Jeff Simonetti with National Demographic Corporation (NDC), who briefed the City Council and provided a PowerPoint presentation on the redistricting rules and goals, discussed the submitted draft maps, as well as the next steps regarding the following hearing, which are on file in City Clerk's Office.
Council Member Bennett stated the numbers on the maps are based on existing boundaries and that there is not a mapping tool that could evenly distribute all of the required criteria to draw maps. Mr. Simonetti said that is correct, and clarified that the voting population is whoever is eligible to vote and does not require persons to be registered to vote nor is party affiliation considered.
Council Member Moran said that the "Possible Neighborhoods" list had not been updated from the last public hearing and noted that Fairfield Ranch is still missing. She asked to combine a few other locations as well as remove Vellano from the list. City Clerk Balz clarified the direction to add Fairfield Ranch, combine Carbon Canyon and Sleepy Hollow and eliminate Vellano from the list. Council Member Moran answered affirmatively.
