Council Member Bennett asked if the Grand Avenue Park rink was intended for roller hockey only. Community Services Marshall responded that initially it was for roller hockey as these other sports were not around at that time.

Discussion ensued on the billable rates paid by Derby Dames, the rise of pickleball in the community, the Jack Bulik Park & Multi-Purpose Rink in Fontana location, sport court surfacing and coexisting of multiple sports.

Council Member Johsz expressed his interest in exploring ways to work for both sports.

Council Member Marquez spoke about the needs in the 90's and the Commission supporting hockey. He spoke about the costs to maintain the parks, the amount of property tax the City receives and the importance of providing our youth with options.

Council Member Marquez continued with the history of incorporating pickleball into the tennis courts and stated that he wanted to work out a surface to coexist while researching other funding opportunities to expand.

Vice Mayor Moran requested a staff report with information based on the Fontana model. She also suggested limiting league registration to Chino Hills residents only and recommended if following Fontana's scenario did not work out and we kept the Grand Avenue Park as a dedicated roller hockey venue, maybe reallocating funds to different capital improvement projects that have already been dedicated to parks as an example and reaching out to current developers with projects to fund courts if there is space.

Mayor Rogers stated that the City works hard to cross utilize city facilities. He added that it's work exploring options as it relates to hybrid surfacing.

CHINO HILLS CITY COUNCIL 2023-247
