She added that under the agreement with Waste Management that went into effect July 2022, many requirements have been achieved such as trash container lids identified as blue for recycled, green for organics and black for trash for residential and commercial customers. She noted that there are key provisions including: jurisdiction shall monitor containers to minimize contamination, conduct route reviews, education, and outreach, and reporting of contamination monitor requirements.
Waste Management monitors contamination by using their Smart Truck Program that will be equipped with three cameras. This technology will identify contamination when it is taking place. Once the footage is collected, a dedicated team reviews the footage and if contamination is identified, a second inspection of the footage will occur. The customer will be notified via email or by paper and will include a link to the footage. Per the agreement, there is a six-month period when contamination is identified, you can receive up to three notifications and then after that a fee may be incurred.
