CHULA VISTA COMMISSION ON AGING
2022 YEAR END REPORT
(June through December 2022)
The Chula Vista Commission on Aging (COA) welcomed two new Commissioners in the Spring and had one Commissioner resign. Working with six of the seven Commission positions filled the Commissioners began their six-month journey committing to the responsibilities of the position, completing the necessary administrative tasks and gaining an understanding of the operating guidelines and The Brown Act.
The Commission realized early on that the every-other-month meeting schedule was not going facilitate the accomplishment of the activities and program goals the COA had identified. The COA scheduled monthly meetings which each Commissioner has attended.
The COA further identified that attention needs to be directed towards identifying the community communication resources available and utilizing these resources in a more effective manner.
Some of the six-month highlights include:
• Visitation and inspection of the Heritage Community Center, Montevalle Community Center, Norman Park Senior Center, Otay Community Center, Parkway Community Center, Parkway Aquatic Center, Salt Creek Community Center and the Veterans Community Center to evaluate potential future senior activities and programs. • Contacts were established at the Civic Center Branch Library, South Chula Vista Branch Library and the Otay Ranch Branch Library to lay the foundation for future senior community activities and events and utilize distribution channels. • Reestablished contacts with the Chula Vista Police Department and the Chula Vista Fire Department for future joint program development.
• Increased Commissioner participation in activities (Easter, Ice Cream Social, Senior Day, Halloween, etc.) conducted at the Norman Park Senior Center facilitating interaction with seniors and an exchange of ideas.
• Implementation of the initial "Senior Forum" program, in conjunction with the Commission On Aging monthly meetings, at the South Chula Vista Library and Norman Park Center to gather additional senior input on activities, events and presentations. An expanded 2023 schedule is being planned to include Park and Recreation, municipal and Senior Residential facilities locations. • Placement of a COA table at the Otay Ranch Farmers Market (November 15th) to distribute event information, solicit community input and encourage participation in and awareness of senior activities and the COA.
• Redesigning of an updated Senior brochure providing useful Senior resource and program information.
