PAUL HENKIN
This seems to be a very thoughtful report, but I am not sure if I like its focus on future earnings as opposed to general studies and innovation.
The initial needs survey seems to have been highly tailored - The report says: "40% of South County adults were interested in enrolling in a bachelor’s degree program in the next two years." Really? almost half of South County needs a BA or BS? I really doubt it's near that many. Is this a poll of all residents or just those of college age?
Then, it says "To determine the most valuable academic programs to recruit [areas of interest to the enrolees] ...We adjusted hiring expectations based on eight trends, including AI and automation, climate change, nearshoring, and changes in California’s regulatory environment."
It is good that the college is looking at the future needs and requirements of its students. However, I am a bit worried that you may be taken in by a slick ad campaign based on tailored data.
On May 23, 2023, the City Council approved an agreement with Southwestern Community College District to conduct an academic program planning study to support university recruitment and expansion efforts. The first phase of research consisted of an academic program and workforce needs assessment study.
Findings from this research and the next steps will be presented by Southwestern College staff and the lead researcher.
