25. What are your principal areas of interest in our City government, and what experience or special knowledge can you bring to those areas?
I think one of the most magical aspects of City Government is seeing how small steps today can lead to positive change in the future. In particular with the environment, small actions today can preserve the beautiful view that is Chula Vista for generations to come. In pursuit of this goal, I bring my extensive experience in research.
During High School in my IB Biology classes I created extensive policy memos on environmental issues from the correlation between population size and carbon dioxide in California Counties to the change in carbon dioxide levels in New York City before and after COVID 19. In Speech and Debate I learned to combine that intensive research with distilling arguments to their most important points. More recently as an Intern with the Mayor of Chula Vista I created policy memos including one on Sustainability.
But I've also had the opportunity to transform research into action. As Vice Chair of Student Site Council at my High School I helped authorize millions in federal funding towards education enrichment program like Summer Classes and additional educational support for Students. In Speech and Debate we were taught to use our platform to give voice to the voiceless and to always consider who we were advocating for. Weaving together our rhetoric and research to raise critical issues and highlight disadvantaged groups. These are all experiences I would apply as a Sustainability Commissioner.
26. What would you hope to accomplish in the role of a Sustainability Commissioner? (250 words or less) One measure I hope to advance is encouraging the creation of more pedestrian friendly infrastructure in development projects. The 24 mile Bayshore Bikeway wrapping around San Diego bay and straddling the Pacific is a beautiful example of this. It provides multiple benefits from bringing funds for nature conservation, encouraging cleaner forms of transportation, and placing the mesmerizing expanse that is our coastline on full display. In terms of transport on a broader city level we can expand programs like the Community City Shuttle which ensures that seniors have access to transport and in turn essential services.
I also hope to further incentivize and facilitate the "small steps" that we as individuals can take to make a difference. From the tire recycling program, water recycling program, or compost program. Looking further into the future I hope to contribute to assessing how we can mitigate the effects of Climate Change, ensuring that all Chula Vistans are protected from the effects of extreme weather particularly heat and wildfires, and finally considering decarbonization programs.
Ultimately I hope to help work towards a more sustainable city so that future generations to come can gaze out from Bayside park and see the same stunning view that I see today.
