25. What are your principal areas of interest in our City government, and what experience or special knowledge can you bring to those areas?
I am interested in the Youth Advisory Member Position, as l am passionate about advocating for teenagers in Chula Vista who are struggling with mental illness, addiction, or both. My goal is to serve as a voice for these teens and work towards improving the mental health resources and support systems available to Chula Vista's students. As the co-president of Students Addressing Vaping and Addiction (SAVA), a club funded through Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE), I have significant experience in addiction prevention and youth advocacy. I am a certified Student Health Advocate and have had the privilege of speaking at City Hall in front of the City Council, as well as at the Sweetwater Union High School District Headquarters. In these speeches, I shared my personal journey with addiction and how my involvement with SAVA has helped me remain clean for over a year. I also outlined how our club takes a compassionate, non-judgmental approach to helping students prevent or overcome nicotine addiction. My personal experiences with addiction, psychiatric hospitalization, and mental health treatments have given me a deep understanding of the challenges many teenagers face. I have met and spoken with numerous teens in Chula Vista who feel ignored or dismissed by the very adults they should be able to trust for help. This has fueled my determination to improve the school environment and provide education to both staff and students about addiction and mental health. I believe my passion, experience, and firsthand understanding uniquely qualify me to contribute meaningfully to the Youth Advisory Board and to help address these critical issues facing our community.

Not answered

23. In what ways are you associated with the business and or civic activities of the City? How has your participation reflected the interests and concerns with the protection of the civil liberties of all people which make up the City's residents?
I have been involved for many years with community events such as faith and blue, prayer community events with CVPD, Mayor McCann's clergy alliance, several outreaches through the years, active in city council meetings over time, and initiatives that begin prayer at city hall in 2019 that continues today. My church is a food distribution center on the first Friday of every month partnering with the San Diego Food Bank, distributing food to homes on the average of 700 homes in the South Bay. We have participated in care packages for the elder care facilities and toy drives for local orphanages. Lastly, I have volunteered and sponsored one of our local little leagues, and have kids who participate in CV Rec. As a native who went to elementary, middle, and high school here, I know this city well enough east and west to help make a difference. I try to stay connected with our city leaders and community.

24. Please describe how you represent the diversity of Chula Vista? Additionally to the above, I speak Spanish, reach the Filipino, white, and black communities of CV. Hoping to reach across the many demographics of Chula Vista. My background and upbringing and things mentioned above can bring a healthy perspective to this commission.

25. Please describe your interest in fostering better human relations in the City of Chula Vista.

We need a healthy, well rounded Chula Vista that is truly represented not by a microcosm of what is seen on social media or mainstream media, but by what is seen on our city blocks, community centers, marketplaces, houses of worship and more. We are more than what is displayed on a Facebook post, we are more than a Tik tok reel. We are a community of hard working, family oriented individuals who want to engage each other and provide a Chula Vista that is not swayed by what is plastered by outside agendas but wholesome values that has made us who we are today. I know we all have differences, but together we can come to united efforts to have a city that can be family friendly, built on lasting values, celebrating the cultural tapestry of our residents young and old.

26. What would you hope to accomplish in the role of a Human Relations Commissioner? (250 words or less)
In my role of a Human Relations Commissioner, I hope to provide a clear voice of reason, value, and fairness. A voice that will help celebrate the diversity of our city while maintaining the integrity of our community values. We need to strive to retain our identity as Chula Vistans, while looking into the future, securing a prosperous city for the generations to come. I want to be a voice for those I can represent and a friend to those I have yet to know better, finding common ground for strength, resolve, faith, hope, unity and peace for our city. This will and can be accomplished as I support our Mayor and Council. As a HRC, I can help evaluate ways we can be more effective in identifying how we are representing the CV demographics.

27. Please upload a resume in addition to your application (not required, but strongly encouraged).
