Dear Mr. Mayor,
Nation city youth deserve safe schools, healthy communities, and protection from the harms of tobacco and vaping. Yet a recent survey shows that 42% of students who use tobacco products— most commonly through vaping— are purchasing them from local stores. At the same time, up to 40% of Chula Vista retailers are still selling fiavored tobacco products, despite existing laws.
This is about protecting children from addiction, disease, and learning difficulties linked to vaping. Stronger regulation of tobacco retailers is a necessary and urgent step. The choice fiavors speciflcally madeto intrigue children is unnecessary. Creatingloyal customers from this young of an age and ruin potential futures that can change lives.
We urge you to support a stronger Tobacco Retail License (TRL) policy that will:
Reduce youth access to tobacco and vaping products
Stop illegal fiavored tobacco sales
Promote fairness among local businesses
Ensure regular compliance and enforcement
Mayor, your leadership can help make Chula Vista a safer, healthier place for all. Please stand with our youth and community by supporting stronger tobacco retail regulations.
Sincerely,
Ava Irizarry (Sweetwater)
