It is a universally shared conundrum when tragedy befalls someone we consider to be bad, dangerous or contemptible. And it is more than reasonable to believe that we can acknowledge the evil of gratuitous violence, and still stand for our values. I applaud our councilmembers who bravely and openly disavowed the violent killing of Charlie Kirk, and also refused to show support for what he stood for. I do not believe that Charlie Kirk represented the values and ideals of the people that these elected officials represent. And thus, it is undoubtedly their prerogative to represent the will of their constituents to not honor his work or his message. If this is not the case, then these elected officials will be voted out by the will of the people. But in no way do their actions transgress their obligations as representatives, and I pray that those who are fueling this tension with more hate, please consider Charlie Kirk's wishes to follow the teachings of Jesus and love thy neighbor.
