GFWC Clayton Valley Woman's Club – December Unsung Hero In 1973, Eldora Hoyer and Emmy Joakimson were inspired to invite local women to join them at Endeavor Hall to form a woman's club. Thus, Clayton Valley Woman's Club was organized, and federated a year later. Emmy became the charter President and the first meetings were held at Endeavor Hall.

Members immediately made decisions on fundraising and the process for donating the proceeds from those events. They formed committees, Special Interest Groups and Adventure Groups. Those early years set the standards and precedents for the Club to follow and the Club's purpose was, and still is, service.

In the early years, they organized the first Christmas Home Tour and Craft and Bake Sale. They completed the Bi-Centennial Quilt which is on permanent loan to the City of Clayton that you see hanging in this room today. They published two cookbooks, organized fashion shows and held Art Auctions & Wine Tastings. They walked for the March of Dime, organized blood drive and several Black Diamond Balls, chili cook-offs, casino night and fashion shows.

Today, service is still their mission and every year, they offer a $2000 scholarship to a girl graduating from Diablo Valley College who is matriculating to a California university.

They also give donations to the Clayton Community Library, the Clayton and Concord Historical Societies, they collect donations for Pennies for Pines to support reforestation in our State, as well as collect for the Heifer Project which purchases chickens, cows and other animals for needy families. They also donate to a women's shelter, Silverwood School and several local food pantries.

For over 50 years, Clayton Valley Woman's Club has accomplished so much by giving to Clayton and beyond, and they are still going strong today, making friends and having fun and they always welcome new members. So I am deeply honored tonight to present the December Unsung Hero Award to Clayton Valley Women’s Club! 5 TO: CLAYTON CITY COUNCIL

• December 2: I was appointed to the Cal Cities 2026 Advancing Equity Advisory Committee. This will be my second year serving on this committee to support Leagues’ ongoing efforts to help cities across California eliminate racial disparities, heal divisions, and build more equitable, inclusive communities. • December 3-4: As the newly-elected Vice President of the League of California Cities, East Bay Division, I attended the Cal Cities League Leaders Workshop in Rancho Mirage to collaborate with leaders throughout the state to help set goals for 2026. I advocated for disaster preparedness and fire resiliency within the public safety priority goal.
• December 3: I received a presidential appointment from Cal Cities President Gabe Quinto to serve another one-year term on the Community Services Policy Committee. I have served on this committee since 2022. The committee meets at least times each year and actively debates, shapes, and steers Cal Cities’ policymaking process and advocacy efforts related to natural disaster preparation, parks and recreation, childcare, libraries, community and human services programs, and cultural arts. Please send me your ideas regarding the above issues so I can continue representing Clayton’s local interests on a state-wide level. • December 6: I attended the Holidays in the Grove - Annual Tree Lighting event.

Kudos to Debby Bruno and her volunteers for putting on this annual CBCA event featuring the MDE 2nd Grade students and CVCHS Marching Band. The Merrie Olde Carolers were also a nice addition this year.
• December 8: I attended the Mt. Diablo Education Foundation Board Meeting where we discussed ways we can continue to support children attending MDUSD schools, including MDE and DVMS.
• Had several conversations with Clayton residents regarding the city flag proposal and revenue generating options, park lighting and street safety, and Firewise in local HOAs.
• Attended our East Bay Division Board Planning Retreat to set our annual calendar of events and topics to present to the membership, and provided a recap of our League Leaders Workshop. The League’s 25-26 Advocacy Priorities are the following:
