STAFF REPORT
TO: Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM: Angelika Abellana, Recreation Manager
VIA: Dan Barros, City Manager
MEETING DATE: October 23, 2024
SUBJECT: Recreation Services Department Quarterly Review, July - September 2024
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council adopt:
MOTION TO ACCEPT INFORMATION REPORT ON RECREATION DEPARTMENT PROGRAM, ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND TRIPS FOR THE THIRD QUARTER OF 2024
BACKGROUND
Participation
The Recreation Services Department offered programs, activities, events, and trips for all age groups during the past quarter. Below is a summary of participation levels by demographic:
•A total of 156 adults and seniors participated in enrichment programs, which is an increase of 25 participants from the third quarter of 2023. Staff attributes this rise in participation to greater interest in the Ladies Social and Friday Films events, as well as an increase in Zumba class attendance.
•A total of 200 adults and seniors participated in trips and events. This represents a decrease of 14 participants from the third quarter of 2023. Staff attributes the decrease in participation to lower attendance at the Veterans Village ID Day. •A total of 2,280 youth and teens participated in enrichment programs, marking an increase of 980 participants from the third quarter of 2023. Staff attributes this growth to the participation in in-person Summer Camp Early and Afternoon Care, as well as increased interest in Parents Night Out.
•A total of 177 youth and teens participated in events and trips, reflecting an increase of 63 participants from the third quarter of 2023. Staff attributes this rise to greater participation in Day Camp special excursion field trips during July and August. •A total of 1,838 youth, adults, and seniors participated in community programs, representing an increase of 570 participants from the third quarter of 2023. Staff ITEM #6
Staff Report - Recreation Quarterly Review, July - September 2024 Page 2 of 2 attributes this rise to family programs such as the Parol Lantern Workshop, Grandparents Day Celebration, and Summer Concerts. Additionally, open pickleball sessions were made available to the public, resulting in a great turnout in the evenings.
The attachment contains a detailed breakdown of participation by program.
Rental Activity
The Colma Community Center was rented for 44 different events:
● Resident Rental (15 social, 1 meeting)
● Colma Non-Profit (1 fundraiser)
● Non-Resident Rental (2 funeral)
● Non-Resident Nonprofit (1 training)
● Non-Resident Nonprofit, kitchen only (23 reservations) ● In House Reservations (1 blood drive)
The Sterling Park Recreation Center was rented for 11 different events:
• Sterling Park Resident Rental Reservations – Picnic Site only (1 social event) • Sterling Park Resident Rental Reservations – including Picnic Site (6 social events) • Sterling Park Resident Rental Reservations (4 social events)
ANALYSIS
In the third quarter of 2024, a total of 4,651 participants attended 51 programs. This represents an increase of 1,619 participants compared to the third quarter of 2023. Staff attributes the increase in participation to the Summer Day Camp, Early/Afternoon Care, and greater involvement in senior trips. Additionally, the rise can be attributed to centennial events such as the Colma Community Fair & Parade and the Annual Town Picnic.
Staff estimates that 33 percent of the population had a current Colma I.D. during the third quarter of 2023.
There was a total of 55 rentals, which is a decrease of 1 rental from the third quarter of 2023.
Staff attributes the decrease in rentals to the construction of the solar panel carports at the Colma Community Center parking lot, which occupied the first half of the lot.
Sustainability Impact
Staff coordinates and implements programs and activities that align with the Town’s Climate Action Plan and Sustainability Policy. For example, at events including the Annual Town Picnic, cups, plates, forks, knives, and spoons are made from recyclable and/or compostable materials.
CONCLUSION
Staff recommends that City Council Adopt the motion to accept informational report on Recreation Department program, activities, events and trip for the third quarter of 2024.
