ATHENS

SERVICES
Deliver Excellent Service.

Hire and Develop the Best People.

Foster a Safe, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment.

That’s the Athens Way.

WHO WE ARE
Athens Services is a fourth-generation, family-owned waste collection and recycling company based in Los Angeles County and built on an unwavering commitment to service, employees, and the environment. Founded in 1957 with just two trucks, Athens Services has grown to be the largest privately held environmental services company in Southern California,
serving more than 50 communities.

At heart, we are a landfill avoidance company, diverting materials toward recycling, reusing and composting whenever possible thanks to cutting-edge technology and our dedicated team. Our company culture embraces diversion as a
fundamental strategy to reduce waste that would otherwise be sent to landfills. We offer unmatched service to our customers while giving back generously to support our communities.

Dedication to service, people, and the environment.

That’s the Athens Way.
“SIMPLY PUT, WE HAVE THE RESOURCES AND INFRASTRUCTURE OF A NATIONAL HAULER, WITH THE SERVICE AND DEPENDABILITY OF A LOCAL, FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS.” — Cesar Torres, Executive Vice President
The heart and soul of Athens Services is our diverse, dedicated team of more than 1,750 people. Our workforce is among the most experienced in our industry, with our drivers averaging 10 years or more in the field, and we maintain a first-rate safety record across all the areas where we operate.

We offer generous pay, benefits and retirement plans that exceed the standard for our industry, along with regular opportunities for mentoring, career growth and development.

At Athens, we believe in treating our employees as family. We strive to hire great people and provide a safe, healthy and positive work environment. When we acquire another business, we make it a priority to provide all employees the opportunity to continue in their jobs as part of the Athens Family. We are extremely proud of the high employee retention rates and seamless business transitions we have achieved on behalf of our customers over the years.

An Experienced, Committed Team Organics Waste to Organic Gardens

ORGANICS WASTE TO ORGANIC GARDENS
Athens has built the most advanced green waste and
organics composting facility in the region. American
Organics rapidly processes organic waste while producing the highest quality, contaminant-free compost. This
facility reduces thousands of metric tons of greenhouse gases annually by diverting organic waste from landfills, completing this sustainable, closed-loop diversion process.

We are also the first in our industry to process waste using an organic separation press – groundbreaking technology we helped develop that uses high pressure to squeeze
organic material from the waste stream. This creates a
nutrient-rich liquid that can eventually be used to help generate electricity or fuel vehicles.

INCREASED RECYCLABES RECOVERY
To increase diversion from landfills, Athens has installed state-of-the-art recycling technology in all of our material recovery facilities. Just 14 minutes after a truckload of “blue bin” material arrives at our facility in Sun Valley, for instance, it is sorted to identify and divert resources such as paper, metal, cardboard, plastic, and other recyclable material.

This work is assisted by an advanced sorting robot
powered by artificial intelligence called Max-AI. This
advanced technology makes autonomous sorting
decisions at high speeds, allowing us to improve
diversion rates and efficiency.

Athens Services believes in a zero-waste future, and we’re working with our customers and our communities to make this goal a reality. Every day, we strive to reduce solid waste, recyclable materials, and green waste sent to landfills. This is a company priority that reflects the goals of the communities where we operate and aligns with the sustainability policies of the State of California.

We focus our efforts on reducing waste while increasing recycling through outreach and education, state-of-the-art materials recovery facilities, and green waste composting to maximize diversion.

IMPROVES QUALITY OF
LIFE FOR OUR TEAM.

Athens currently owns and operates three Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in the Los Angeles area, with a fourth in development. There are two located in Sun Valley and one in the City of Industry, as well as our 50-acre composting facility in Victorville. These facilities provide a wide assortment of recycling opportunities to meet the region’s diversion needs, and are renowned for innovative technology, impeccable safety records, and green building certifications.

Athens recently expanded and enclosed our Crown Recycling facility, one of the most comprehensive MRFs in the area, investing $50 million to increase facility capacity to 6,700 tons per day of organics material, construction and demolition, and mixed solid waste.

Athens developed Southern California’s first LEED® Certified and solar-powered recycling facility, and our near-zero emission natural gas vehicles are 90% cleaner than the EPA’s strictest emissions standard.

Cutting-Edge Waste Processing
and Recycling Facilities
Honoring the power of outstanding customer service is fundamental to the success of Athens Services and a core pillar of the Athens Way. Our local customer service department is staffed by 70 of the best representatives in the industry who speak a variety of languages and are empowered to deliver delightful experiences to our customers.

To strengthen our customer service and community engagement efforts, we open dedicated Sustainability Centers to better serve customers and communities in the areas where we operate. Customers can visit these centers in person to learn information, make payments, or request service adjustments. The centers also serve as a hub for our outreach and education efforts, enabling our dedicated recycling coordinators to educate schools, businesses, and organizations on best practices in recycling.
