RECOMMENDATION:

The City Council will consider adopting a Resolution to amend job specifications belonging to the Transportation Department.

BACKGROUND:

On August 17, 2021, the City Council approved the Citywide Classification Plan and Job Specifications, including the Transit Equipment Service Worker, which was retitled from Transportation Service Worker, Fleet Mechanic and Senior Bus Operator, which was retitled from a Cover Bus Operator.

On September 21, 2021, The City Council approved actions related to the Transportation Department as it relates to operational and staffing needs.

The Human Resources Department is actively recruiting for transportation job openings and would request to use the updated job specifications that were approved on August 17, 2021 as part of the Citywide Classification Study.

These job specifications will be used for both the part time and full time job specifications for these classifications if approved. The updated job specifications are attached herein for Council’s review and approval.

ANALYSIS:

The Human Resources Department periodically reviews classification specifications and recommends changes to the City’s Classification and Compensation Plan. Staffing and recruitment efforts were discussed and reviewed between the Transportation and Human Resources Departments. As a result, staff recommends the approval of amending the current Transportation Service Worker, Fleet Mechanic and Cover Bus Operator job specifications and new titles as already approved by Council during the Citywide Classification Study.

This item was vetted by the City of Commerce Employees Association without objections.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No Fiscal Impact since this item is merely to approve using the job specifications that were already approved by Council as part of the Citywide Classification Study in 2021 prior to completing the Total Compensation Study and for current recruitment efforts in the Transportation Department.
