SUBJECT: Honoring Sandy Nitta – Commerce Water Polo Funding Request for Team Vegas Founders Cup Meeting Date: October 25, 2022
RECOMMENDATION:

The Parks & Recreation Department is respectfully requesting funds for five Commerce Boys & Girls Water Polo Teams to attend the “Team Vegas Founders Cup”, in Henderson, Nevada on November 4-6, 2022.

ANALYSIS/BACKGROUND:

The Team Vegas Founders Cup Tournament and Team Director Sandy Nitta, is very near and dear to the history of the Commerce Aquatics Program. Former City of Commerce employee Sandy Nitta was the pioneer who initiated the City of Commerce Water Polo Program in 1971. It was then, that one of the most improbable American water polo pipelines began, allowing the opportunity for multiple Commerce athletes to represent not only the City of Commerce, but the United States of America as members for the USA National Team. The City of Commerce Water Polo Programs would like to the opportunity to show their gratitude by participating in this tournament.

In recognition of Coach Sandy Nitta’s commitment, forward thinking and pioneering the Water Polo program in the City of Commerce, Sandy Nitta will be recognized on July 1, 2023 and inducted into the City of Commerce Hall of Champions.  The event will consist of an unveiling of her photo, a luncheon, followed by a presentation on the main stage for residents and others to attend. The Parks and Recreation Commission was delighted to have selected Sandy Nitta for this prestigious award and welcomes any additional feedback from the City Council with respect to our honoree, Sandy Nitta.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Should City Council approve this request for funds, a total of $9,812.50 will need to be appropriated and allocated to the respective travel accounts. Staff is recommending that the aforementioned funding come from one-time funds ($90,000) that Commerce Energy Storage, LLC compensated the city for sale of property.
