Item No.

SUBJECT: Resolution by the City Council Re-Naming a Portion of Tubeway Avenue after Haig Papaian, former Commerce Casino CEO and President MEETING DATE: June 11, 2024
RECOMMENDATION:

The City Council will consider for adoption a Resolution renaming a portion of Tubeway Avenue Street in honor of Haig Papain.

ANALYSIS:

The City Council has directed staff to rename a street within the Commerce Casino area in honor of Haig Papaian, recognizing his undeniable impact on the community. Haig Papaian has served on the Board of Directors of the Commerce Casino since 1996 and has been a President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board. His dedication to philanthropy is evident through his service on the YMCA Advisory Board, the Executive Board of the Sheriff's Foundation, and other organizations including sponsoring of various City of Commerce events.

Haig Papaian has generously contributed to and partnered with various causes, including the YMCA, Rio Hondo Boys and Girls Club, and the City of Commerce Scholarship Fund. He is a valued member of the Commerce community, serving its residents and businesses with honor and distinction. In recognition of Haig's legacy, the City Council proposes renaming a portion of Tubeway Avenue, adjacent to Commerce Casino.

The staff has identified a portion of Tubeway Avenue as a potential street to be renamed "Haig Way" or "Papaian Way" at the Council's discretion. The section of Tubeway Avenue considered for renaming is located between Smithway Street to the north and Telegraph Road to the south.
