AGENDA REPORT
TO: Honorable City Council
FROM: City Manager
SUBJECT: Creative Crosswalks
Meeting Date: August 13, 2024
RECOMMENDATION
The City Council will consider adopting a Resolution appropriating $200,000 from Art in Public Places Fund for the installation of creative artwork for six crosswalks on Commerce Way and Harbor Street.
BACKGROUND
On March 28, 2023, staff presented a Community Safety Plan to the City Council. As part of that plan, information was provided to Council on ladder vs. creative crosswalks. Ladder crosswalks are longitudinal wide white stripes (yellow near schools) designated where to walk across the road as high visibility markings that provide a visual cue for people who drive and bike of where to expect crossing pedestrians.
An alternative to ladder crosswalks was also discussed as creative crosswalks. Bright colors and unique designs in crosswalks can create a sense of community while keeping pedestrians safer and drawing drivers’ attention to them. As Council has expressed a desire to install some creative crosswalks, staff recommends approving a Resolution to implement a Pilot Program to install them at the following intersections:
Commerce Way and Harbor Street (4 crosswalks)
Commerce Way and Jardine Street (1 crosswalk)
Harbor Street from BVAC to Rosewood Elementary (1 crosswalk) Following Council’s approval, staff will work to secure proposals of artwork for Council consideration.
FISCAL IMPACT
Staff recommends appropriating $200,000 from Art in Public Places as an initial estimate.
