A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY OF COMMERCE
DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF APRIL AS
AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS, autism is a lifelong neurological condition that typically appears during early childhood and can impact social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation; and WHEREAS, autism is recognized as a spectrum disorder, meaning each individual with autism experiences a unique set of strengths and challenges, requiring tailored support and understanding; and WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, autism affects approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States, and early diagnosis and intervention are key to improved outcomes; and WHEREAS, individuals with autism are valued members of our community, and it is important to promote acceptance, inclusion, and support so that all individuals can live fully and with dignity; and WHEREAS, the City of Commerce strives to provide all-inclusive programming open to individuals of all abilities, ensuring that everyone in our community has access to meaningful recreational, educational, and social opportunities; and WHEREAS, to further support individuals with sensory sensitivities, the City of Commerce offers calming zones at special events—designated spaces where community members can relax and regroup in a quiet and comfortable environment if needed; and WHEREAS, Autism Awareness Month is an opportunity to educate the public, promote acceptance, and celebrate the contributions of individuals with autism in all aspects of our community; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ivan Altamirano, Mayor of the City of Commerce, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim April 2025 as Autism Awareness Month in the City of Commerce, and encourage all residents to work together to build a compassionate, inclusive society where individuals with autism are supported, celebrated, and empowered to thrive.
