Item No.
TO: Honorable City Council
FROM: City Manager
SUBJECT: Recognition and Tribute to the United States Armed Forces Meeting Date: May 13, 2025
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council conduct a special candle lighting ceremony honoring the five branches of the United States Armed Forces, along with a memorial observance recognizing those who have been killed or are missing in action.
ANALYSIS/BACKGROUND:
On May 6, 2003, the City Council adopted a resolution formally recognizing the service and sacrifice of the United States Armed Forces. In keeping with this tradition, the City of Commerce holds an annual ceremony to honor residents who have served in the following military branches:
U.S. Army
U.S. Navy
U.S. Marine Corps
U.S. Air Force
U.S. Coast Guard
This year’s observance will align with Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated nationally on the third Saturday of May. In addition, the City Council will host a solemn Candlelight Ceremony in recognition of Memorial Day (May 26, 2025), to pay tribute to all U.S. service members who have died or remain missing in action in all conflicts.
These commemorations are intended to express the City’s profound gratitude and enduring respect for the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no additional impact to the current operating budget. All related activities will be carried out using existing departmental resources.
RELATIONSHIP TO STRATEGIC GOALS:
This program supports the City Council’s long-standing commitment to honoring military service and fostering a sense of patriotism and community pride among Commerce residents.
