TO: Honorable City Council
FROM: City Manager
SUBJECT: A Resolution Designating the City of Commerce as a Purple Heart City & COMMENDATION Honoring Purple Heart Recipients Meeting Date: May 27, 2025
RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends that the City Council adopt a Resolution officially designating the City of Commerce as a Purple Heart City, thereby honoring and recognizing the sacrifices of combat-wounded veterans and reaffirming the City’s commitment to supporting our nation’s military heroes.

BACKGROUND:

The Purple Heart Medal, established by General George Washington in 1782, is the oldest military decoration still in use and is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who are wounded or killed in action. The Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH), formed in 1932, works to foster an environment of goodwill among combat-wounded veterans and to promote patriotism and legislative initiatives supporting veterans.

Communities across the United States have joined the Purple Heart Trail—a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges, and cities—by proclaiming themselves Purple Heart Cities to publicly recognize the contributions and sacrifices of Purple Heart recipients.

Designating the City of Commerce as a Purple Heart City would demonstrate the City’s deep appreciation for the courage and dedication of our service members. This designation aligns with the City’s values of honoring our veterans, promoting civic pride, and fostering community awareness of the costs of freedom.

Staff recommends adoption of the resolution as a demonstration of the City’s enduring gratitude and respect for our nation’s heroes.
